Default NHL Installed 10.5K resolution cameras in all arenas

Quote:
Four of the C360 Capture Systems have been installed in each of the NHL’s 32 arenas -- one behind each net and one at each blue line. They are the cameras underpinning the NHL’s official blue line reviews and being used by the NHL’s digital team for unique short-form content.

Other use-cases include:

Enhancing the available angles for -- and quality of -- instant replays.

Producing isolated puck/player tracking feeds (via an integration with the NHL EDGE tracking system), which can be used for content or player health and safety monitoring.

Logging clips of key plays within a game in a togglable database.

Analyzing the performance of game officials (e.g., positioning on the ice, veracity of calls).

I guess we’re committing to dumb reviews of offsides that have no effect on the play.

I would like to see the rule changed such that the offside has to affect the play in that the goal comes from a continuous sequence involving the offside. If the defending team has an opportunity to establish zone presence and the goal comes off the cycle, offside shouldn’t matter.

Well TSN does have a 4K channel if you love watching the Raptors, Eastern CFL games and Leafs games that are blacked out….

Or use with AI and buzz the linesman's watch with onside/offside. End the reviews entirely. Read that Apple is developing a watch specifically with the NHL that provides real-time haptic feedback to the refs for things like penalties expiring, so they don't have to take there eyes of the play. If linesmen have them as well, the cameras could feed them info from the cameras, perhaps.

I got to see these in action from one of the operators a few years ago and they're amazing. Basically a wide angle capture of the entire rink beyond any resolution you've ever seen where anything can be zoomed in on to a ridiculous level. I actually found it quite scary thinking about how it will inevitably be used in surveillance situations. But for sports - it's wild. Think, an isolated camera on literally any and every player at all times. It records everything and then on replay you just zoom in on what you want. Crazy technology.

Please at least put more of those 90s cameras in the net so we can see what's actually f-ing happening.

Ugh, "real time haptic feedback"...

When you could just have the ref have an earpiece to keep him informed thoughtout the game, like soccer has has had for I think over a decade now.

The NHL is just not a serious league when it comes to reffing.

Wait what... I thought the whole point of the new cameras was to first and foremost get calls right...

Yeah the offside review needs to be changed. Some thoughts I had that might fix it:
- 10 second review window, if the goal occurs >10 seconds after the infraction - it is unreviewable.
- Refs have 1 minute to review, no use of slow motion to determine if there was an infraction. This would limit called back goals to only obvious offsides that actually provided an advantage to the scoring team. If it is undetectable in real time, the spirit of the rule stays in effect.

In my day the goal judge waved a flag to signal a goal. And we liked it!
