~$2.25 million is the ask on the Kadri retention. One positive for the Flames is that Markstrom & Andersson retention drops off after this year.
Still the Flames have not agreed to any retention, would prefer a warm body back in return. Retention is completely dead money, atleast with a player-- you can try putting them in an optimal situation and return potential future assets.
As of now, this is officially a trade that might have to wait until summer. However, Kadri has made it clear that he wants out now. From what I had heard back in January, this was not supposed to go down to the wire of the trade deadline.

Question for the CBA bods, can we retain on Kadri from next season but trade the full amount left on this year?

No. It's the same percentage for the entire remainder of the contract.

The conversation about value of retention isn’t as relevant these days IMO. If the flames retain on Kadri it’s to facilitate a move of that asset. It’s the only way he moves and get anything of value in return.
If ownership wants to pay a declining and very likely soon to be disgruntled player $7M per season for 3 more years then that’s their prerogative, but if it were me, I’d certainly part with $6-8M to pay less and actually get something of value back.
|
It really depends on the return imo. If the best out there for a retained Kadri is a 2nd and a B prospect then it’s not that enticing

If Kadri doesn't get traded, he better put his tank hat on.

It was a bit of a conspiracy thought at the time but back in December there were a lot of discussions about Kadri to Montreal.
Montreal traded for Danault, and Kadri's play fell off a cliff pretty much from that point onwards.
I think he's wanted out since mid-December and it's shown in his play.
Flames need to get this done now IMO, probably even more than they need to get Coleman done. And if that requires retention then they probably have to bite the bullet on that but a player back is still preferred.
I'm still surprised Carolina isn't the team. Kadri for 1st + Kotkaniemi + Top Prospect feels like it should work for both sides.

With Conroy, he hasn't hung on to guys that want out very long. He gives it some time, but it's been pretty clear that they don't want guys here that don't want to be here.

I don't really see having to retain on many other guys in the coming 3 years. Huberdeau nobody wants even at 50% and who knows how he will be after surgery. Also may need a contract like his just to reach the cap floor.

Why does it need to get done now from the flames perspective? I would think the flames are in a strong position. They have an asset that other teams want, the asset wants to go to another team and they have a few years of control over Kadri.
I think they can afford to wait until summer and even next year to facilitate a trade. I don’t feel any rush to trade Kadri at this moment.

See I think that's a realistic return and probably the best we'll get given age, term and salary for the player. I would absolutely move Kadri for a package equivalent to that.

For 32% retention of Kadri? It's a terrible package. If we are retaining on Kadri and making his cap hit lower than 5m, there should at least be a 1st included in that, and also a top prospect. A 2nd and a B prospect is only good if we are taking on a cap dump and not retaining at all.

Kadri to Colorado doesn't seem to make much sense to me although I am sure Colorado would like to have him as another centre but they did already give up assets to get Nelson last year. Colorado does not have a pick in the 2026 draft until round 4. Perhaps Kadri with retention for Colorados 2027 1ST, 2027 2ND (the better of theirs or Minnesotas that they own)and Maxmilian Curran?

Fueling up the rocket for a shot into the sun. Guy doesn’t want to be here, get rid of him. They talk about a winning culture, you don’t build that with guys who don’t want to be on the team.

I’d be happy with that return. Just want to keep stockpiling 1st round picks while also opening up roster spots for young players.

Retaining 32% of his contract makes him movable for a return.
You aren't moving him at full freight, so this hypothetical value for retention goes out the window.
You retain and get something or keep at full freight and either don't move him or get next to nothing.
