Losing the Olympic gold medal game, to USA to boot, HURT! If I have to find something to make myself feel better, soften the blow, in this depressing moment, knowing that McPiggy did not get the chance to hang a Olympic Gold Medal around his neck.

I was actually cheering for McDavid late in the game. I think that was a first.
And look what came of it lol. Never doing that again.

If people don't see that McDavid's always been the latter player, they've probably been flattering him more than he deserves.
Today really reflected what you lose in a player like Crosby.

If Crosby is 100% instead of 70ish%, I think Canada would've won the game.

I said it in the other thread.
McDavid needed a Scotty Bowman early in his career to teach him about the other aspects of the game and make him accountable.
Instead we have a player who's game hasn't evolved at all, who plays without the puck like he doesn't care. A player that when it seems like the team needs him to step up he steps back (finals, medal round games this year).
I've said here multiple times that as McDavid gets older he's going to see a probably steeper decline then we thing because his game is predicated on his speed, and if he loses half a step it could effect more then a player like Yzerman who completely evolved his game thanks to Bowman.

They are going to have a ceremony for Mavi aren’t they……..so frickin cringeworthy.
They will show all his points on the Jumbotron, but will they show him selfishly trying to skate through their entire team and then absolutely mail in the back check and d zone coverage…. I doubt it.

100% agree with this. McDavid doesn’t have elite hockey IQ, and as he slows with age so will the gaps he is given since the opponent doesn’t want to get beat with speed. He could entirely fall off the cliff in his early-mid 30’s. It is highly unlikely he will produce in a similar fashion to Crosby.

Also think the game will keep getting faster as teams prioritize speed in their defensemen. Every team is looking for the next Makar/Hughes/Hutson in drafts now… rather than looking for the next tanev. So I think team defence around the league over the next 5-10 years will shift to faster defencemen who are quick on their edges… there will be fewer and fewer defencemen that McDavid can burn with his speed as they get faster and he gets slower.

I think there will always be a place for a defenseman like Tanev in the NHL.
Just to add on...
Today's dynamic defensemen haven't redefined the position. Bobby Orr did. Teams have been looking for these guys ever since. The fact is there just aren't many guys like that around.

Just look no further than Whitecloud.
It's awesome that we have Parekh, but that doesn't diminish the value of Whitecloud and Bahl.

If Crosby was 70%, he probably plays. I'm guessing his injury is pretty serious. I doubt much would have kept him out of that game.

Teams have never looked for the next Tanev in the draft. That kind of defensive ability only comes from development and experience. You simply don't find it in 18-year-old kids, so you can't draft for it. Tanev himself was never drafted.

As a player? No, they lost a round robin game in 2010.
As captain? No, they lost in the round robin of 4 nations.
In elimation games, both as captain and not? Yes.

I disagree. Dallas drafted Grushnikov and Calgary traded for him hoping he would develop into a player like Tanev. They both knew he was never going to be a high flying offensive player. Both teams hoped he would be an excellent defensive defenseman.

Are people still gonna say McPiggy is the best player in the world? Of course they are, who am I kidding, but, in the most important game of his life, the most important period of his life and the most important shift of his life, well, he is on the ice for goal against. But he is voted MVP, and that's what he is, the MVP in a losing result.
