4 nations was fun but it doesn’t have the same juice as a gold medal or Stanley cup deciding game. And Connor hasn’t had the big play in those games so far.
Even in four nations all he did was stand in front of the net uncovered. It was a great shot but it wasn’t a big skill play from him. It was a lapse by the Americans defence.
certainly felt like McDavid thought he needed to be the hero in OT, especially wearing the C after Crosby went down. Thought he overpassed quite a bit in regulation, then he tries twice to do it all on his own in OT. Then the bad backcheck.
He's a heck of a player, but in these moments, when it's all or nothing ... he's not Crosby, that's for sure.

There are a lot of scapegoats when the best team doesn't take home gold. But it doesn't even get to OT if the 5 on 3 is capitalised on, or if Toews or Mackinnon score. It's not McDavid's fault.
Guys like Bedard, Schaefer, Chychrun, Raddysh, Scheifele, etc could have been difference makers. I don't see what the point is in denying it. Instead, we get old man Doughty, old man Marchand, Sanheim, Parayko, etc. Loyalty over quality, just like 2006.
For everyone whining about McDavid, didn't he score the game winner last year?
How about we stop putting the blame on individual players and just take the loss. The Canadians had the better chances but the Americans capitalized on theirs.
It sucks. Hopefully, Canada is up for revenge in 4 years. This team will likely look a lot more different.
such a great take. no need to blame. i am no Mcdavid fan but the guy plays his tail off to try and win, mistakes will happen. the team in 4 years will be stacked also. Now i can go back to not cheering for 97
The Olympics are actually very time sensitive, there is a lot of planning that goes into moving people around, where big groups of people will be at what time, transportation and so on. You can't have a game that could go on and one for another couple of hours, 3-on-3 ensures a quick finish and timings staying on track.
Not when it’s the last event and it’s nhlers. There is zero reason not to do 5 on 5 or maybe 4 on 4. 3 on 3 is a joke.
I wonder if McDavid is just stupid. Like, he has slightly below average IQ, or he has just really far below average hockey IQ. I don't know. When you think of all the talent that he has, and the fact that he can't put it together in important games, I don't know.

There’s really no way to “fix” it, but a sport with as much randomness/luck as hockey combined with single elimination is forever going to produce more bad results than I’d like. No reasonable way to change the format, just can’t help but compare to something like basketball where a team this dominant runs away with the game 99.9% of the time.
The only higher scoring forwards they didn't bring were Scheifele and Johnston. Hagel has as many goals as Scheifele, and more than Bedard. Just two less than Johnston.
Again, for the thousandth time, stat counting in the NHL is not the best way to measure who you're bringing to this tournament. Skillset is. The way certain guys get goals in the NHL is not equal to the way other guys get goals. That's why you don't bring Hyman - what works for him in the NHL doesn't translate to best on best.
Hagel just doesn't do this type of stuff. Nobody else does this on a regular basis.

Hellebuyck was amazing, but let's not act like Binnington lost this game for Canada. He made great saves as well.
You could put prime Luongo, Brodeur or Fleury in net and Canada would have still lost because of that dumb turnover by McDavid in a 3 on 3 OT where puck possession is what matters the most.
Agree to disagree. Brodeur and luongo both make that save on goal 1 and maybe on OT.
Binnington was fine, you'll note in my post I dont blame the loss on him. Im just noting the major difference between roster construction. Dont tell me you wouldnt pick any of the three us goalies over Binnington all things equal.

Only thing he's ever won, a nothing made up tournament
They ####ed up with making this the last event. Basketball wasn't the last event in the Summer Olympics, so it could be put at 9pm local on a Saturday night. This should have been the same to accommodate for the possibility of OT so you don't have to resort to 3 on 3, plus making it mid-afternoon on a Saturday in North America could get you a lot more eyeballs. NHL should demand it for 2030.

Anyone coming in here trying to be white knights to defend their beloved little McDavid is out to lunch. Here on Calgary Puck we hate the Oilers and everyone who plays on their team. He could have scored the game winner and I would still be out here spamming that he is No Good.
McDavid is a loser who cant win the big game and if you dont like hereing that go whine on Reddit or HF Oilers.

They thought they had enough goal scoring
If the score was 6-5 , someone would have complained they didn’t bring enough experience and toughness
I agreed they were wrong

absolutely. Seems like an easy enough fix, and would accommodate both NA and European audiences. Really don't get why they didn't schedule it this way.

And it not just us, Reddit's destroying him too. Anyone defending him is just being devils advocate for the sake of it
