Katz makes and has made decisions on the past on advice from others, so someone else is telling him to bring back Coffey. It’s not anyone in the organization after the way Coffey left last time, so one can only hope it’s Lowe back out the shadows the second time. Lowe came back to basically tell Katz to let go of Chia and McLlellan, after Chia made a power play to remove Lowe when he got hired.
In the big picture the Oilers IMO know full well that the McDavid era is coming to an end in 3-15 months. Katz bringing back Lowe to help with ideas on the transition are music to any Flames fans ears. For as top heavy the Oilers have been since McDavid and Draistial gotten there, only when Lowe truly got out of the picture did those two players and the rest of the roster that gets cobbled together, actually have success, because Lowe was not in there meddling with the players or the coaches and had that organization dysfunctional since he took the job in 1997.

Lowe has retired to some southern oceanfront property and is never going back to Edmonton.

McDavid cost Canada gold with his 3-on-3 OT play.

McDavid may put up a lot of points, but I take a real winner like Crosby every time.

McDavid is destined to win 0 championships in his career it appears. Can't even do it with a loaded team.

It’s interesting that this was likely his last chance in his prime. He’ll still be an elite player in 4 years but he’ll be 33. Most players lose a step by that point in their career. He’ll be on the team of course and one of the top players but losing a step would be a big blow to his game that built so much on his speed.

Maybe, but wouldn’t be so sure.
Katz is a moron but his meddling always comes from the advice of someone he trusts. That was Lowe the entire ownership period (even when Lowe was related to the shadows for a couple years) and Katz didn’t make this Coffey 3.0 appointment in his own.
So someone has gotten in his ear that has such a massive ego to think that this idea, when it’s clearly not worked before and clearly not endorsed by the current coaching staff and maybe even players, would work.

It seems like just last week we were being regaled with tales of how the hockey and indeed the entire broader multiverse worlds were finally getting to see the McDavid that Edmonton fans and media have all seen for years.
I’m going to agree with that.
This is exactly what we have seen for years.
(I don’t blame Mavi for the results, but I had hoped for something more to help with the outcome from “the greatest hockey player on the planet”)
