I know it's premature to say it, but will the gold medal match be the biggest game in Canadian hockey history .... At least since 1972?

Nah...the home-soil 2010 was probably bigger, not as big as '72 but still bigger.

There isn't the same gravitas for this one. We've lost in Italy before, no biggie.

It's hard to separate the elite ability of these athletes with their average intelligence and below average educational levels.

It makes guys like Lanny, Iginla, Conroy (and now Backlund) all the more special. Elite athletes. Fantastic humans.

Are we just going to ignore 2002? 50 years without an Olympic Gold medal and after losing in 96 and 98 this country was seriously questioning if we truly were the best hockey nation.

2002 was bigger too.

You lost the 96 World Cup to the U.S., then didn't even medal in the 98 Olympics, and you were playing in North America which made it big even if it wasn't home soil.

This game is going to be a toss up and I think everyone knows that.

Followed closely by 2010. Embarrassed in 2006 and now on home soil.

Often if you want to improve overall then sometimes you need to be slapped down from time to time.

The post-retirement reality has been pretty sad unfortunately.

He's also an open and fairly vocal Trump supporter.
So he's an old rich white Californian? This all tracks.

No dude, absolutely not. 2002 In Salt Lake City was at whole different level completely. We lost to the States in the 1996 World Cup, then got absolutely embaressed at the '98 winter games, we were supposed to dominate that, the hype was unreal, NHL players at the Olympics, international stage, NHL takes a two week break for this. And we fall flat on our faces. Run into Dom Hasek, can't even medal because we didn't show up against Finland.

2010 was big too, home ice in Vancouver, disappointing show in Italy four years early too but nothing.. absolutely nothing compares to 2002. "Our" game was on the line in 2002, and nothing matched that.

2002 game was just so damn important.

I'm not even sure if 2010 was a bigger win than 2002. 2002 was massive.

Agree 2002 was big, followed by 2010. I don’t think 1998 was an embarrassment. Lost to CR in semi-final against a prime Hasek/Jagr tandem. Otherwise team Canada looked unstoppable.

So many stories in 2002 too.

Gretzky as the GM

Lemieux returning from his battles to play.

A guy like Fleury who many thought shouldn't be there due to his substance abuse issues in the 2-3 years leading up to that tournament.

Kariya getting some redemption after missing 98.

Sakic trying to take claim as the best player in the world.

Young guys like Iginla and Gagne surprising to make the team.

I think any of these tourneys that don't have Russia have to rank below the ones that do. It's not true best on best when they aren't there.
