There really is no such thing as trade in value.
Sell your car privately (you stand to make more cash back this way) and use that cash to barter on your next car. Dealers are less likely to swing you a good deal on a vehicle if you are trading in. But its hard for them to argue with cash.

Of course there's such thing as trade-in value...it's the amount the dealership is going to offer me.
As much as I agree that I could gain more privately, the convience of being able to trade it in is something I'm willing to live with.

My method is to negotiate the price of the vehicle first and after the price is agreed upon, then introduce the used vehicle to the salesman. State how you want and if he balks tell him you'll take your business elsewhere. Most times I get to the door and salesman runs up and says we have a deal

I've heard that recommended before...though I wonder what bearing it would have on how much they'd be willing to offer on the used vehicle. But your right, as long as your strong-willed, you can make a lot happen.
But does anyone know how it works to trade a vehicle in with a lien on it? Is that possible?

Tim, here's a question I have. I am looking to buy a used car private, but the owner still has a loan on it. I am paying cash, what do I do to make sure that the vehicle is clear of leans when I get it?
I thought making the check payable to the bank that financed it would do, am I correct?

You need to know ahead of time what you want for your used vehicle and be firm on it. Of course you have to be realistic with your demands. I usually check private sales to get an idea what the vehicle i'm trying to trade in is worth.
My late father originaly passed this method on to me. Watched him do it a number of times with his vehicles.

I would say that it would be your best best ot make the cheque out to the bank. I would also get a letter of release from the bank saying that there are no leins on it. etc.

Is this still possible? Will this affect my trade-in value? Is there anyways to pass the lien (I think that's the word I'm looking for) from the old to the new?
Thanks a lot.

You can generally bury some of your defecit in the new deal.. Just know going in that you are burying yourself and if you go to trade it again you will be in the same upside down situation..

My example is I bought a car with 200k on it for X and now with 260k on it the most I could sell it for is 1/2 X...so the rate of depreciation after 200k was huge...
I just want to know if there is a good/bad milage time to buy, regardless of brand

That is a hard question to answer.. Generally the 100k marks are the best time to sell before..
for example.. there is a mental barrier between a car with 95,000km and 101,000km even though there is no realy difference on mileage.. It is just a mental thing

Okay, my son lost a wheel on his VW Jetta (180,000 km). It's a 1998. He lost the whole wheel, not a tire. It was a rear wheel. He's lucky he didn't flip the car. The repair bill is 2K. He bought the car for $7500. I don't know what this car is worth and if it's worth fixing. Is it worth 2K to fix this car or should it be junked? It also has some collision damage to be fixed. I don't know the model but could get it. Thank you for any advice.

depending on the model it is atough call to make. How is the car otherwise. Could you take the $2k and put it towards something else and be in a better position..
If you let me know the model i woudl be happy to look it up and try and figure out what it is worth.

Okay, here is an update. It's a '98 VW Jetta 180K km. It's a gasoline (not deisel) GL 2.o L four-door. Condition otherwise is fine, but it needs some brake work. Mechanic nows says it will cost at least $2500 to repair.
Any advice???

Okay,
Looking at buying a 2005 Mercedes C55 AMG from the states, what do you think of this car?
What about cross border compatability?
I was reading some reviews, looking at some pictures - and have fallen in love
