I have no direct source with the team but I am friends with some former Flames players. Former players talk to current players and it from what I have heard Coleman was healthy enough to come back a while ago but the Flames ask has been met so they held him out. The other team accrues cap space daily in the NHL so it makes more sense to wait considering they weren't going to be playing any games anyway. Him and his family also were said to have had a lot of emotional goodbye's around town as they left for their Texas home before the break. I doubt his family even comes back before the deadline.

I would be suprised if Coleman plays another game with the Flames
WOW. Any idea what team?

Are you the GM of the team or something?
Sorry Dino, you had that disrespect coming.
Thank you for your contribution, and to all others that have history breaking news, whether your allegiances are with the other side of the iron curtain or not. It's much more fun dissecting the transaction than it is the creditbility, especially when the provider has established history.

I think you are right though, once the break is done, we will see a flurry of action.

I think it was Dreger a while ago who said Colorado was biding their time to accrue cap space and speculated that Coleman was someone they were interested in.

They don't have a lot of interesting trade bait though. No 1st or 2nd this year, and not really a great prospect pool. I'm not really sure what Coleman's trade value is though. Would Brindley and a 2027 1st be enough or too much? I'm not sold on Brindley but I also think we might be over estimating Coleman's worth in a trade given his age and that he has a lot of control over where he goes.

I imagine there will be several deals ready to go after the break for just that reason, various places around the league.

I have a hard time believing teams could keep things under wrap for that long in this day and age. One of the insiders like Friedman ect. Would have gotten wind of it by now.

They may have gotten wind of it, but they may also be under orders from media outlets to stick to reporting the Olympics for now.

If you look at sites like Lyle Richardson's (Spector's Hockey, no relation to the Oiler shill), you'll see rumours are still out there, they just aren't getting picked up and amplified as much as usual.

Really great point. Sports reporting is at its peak right now with the Olympics, and the outlets/networks, and for that matter the reporters, don't want to take away from the heightening buzz, particularly as the hockey games get more important.

This is going to be a really interesting trade deadline, as teams have a week of fairly uninterrupted negotiations and a week of frenzy and heavy speculation into the deadline.

11:59 PM ET on Sunday February 22. So midnight eastern, essentially. NHL is open for business again on Sunday, 10 PM Calgary time.

SJ would be a nice spot for Coleman.

They wouldn’t require any cap retention leaving that slot open for Kadri…

SJ acquiring both Coleman and Sherwood would be a weird use of assets though, especially when defense is their need

It would make the Sherwood acquisition at least acceptable if not re-signed. If you look at the Pacific division, it's wide open. They just saw what Celebrini could do with top tier talent, I would bet they'd love to at least give him a round or two in the playoffs. Sharks are swimming in prospects. I'm sure they'd give a quality one away for Coleman.

I would be happy with Cole McKinney and the Oilers 1st, for Coleman and Pachal (and the Flames 4th or 5th).

McKinney has been given a defensive role in his first NCAA season, so is not overwhelming offensively and could be bought low. RHC with decent size. I could see him growing in value exponentially next year, when he is higher in the lineup.

Coleman is a really good player but he is not "top tier talent"

No one said Coleman was a top tier player...they said he would help them make the playoffs. Which he would.

I'm not sure if San Jose really needs top tier talent. They have it, in house with Celebrini, Smith, Dickenson, Misa and Musty. They need to raise the floor.

In my posted trade, Coleman slides into a strong third line role with Wennberg and Graf. Pachel moves into the third pairing role with Mukamadullin/Dickenson.

Big jumps on the floor, pushing Kurashev to the 4c, pushing out Ostapchuk and Pachel pushing out Desharnais. In terms of keeping the puck out of the net, and offensive pressure, that's a huge jump forward, and it costs them something that they don't really need, in McKinney and the Oilers 1st.

That trade would be a coaches dream.
