I stopped thinking of it in terms of second or third round years ago. It's much easier to think of it in terms of picks 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 30-50 and so on. What may have been an early second years ago may now be called a late first due to the increase in number of teams so I like to think of it as 28th overall, or 42nd or whatever.
I'm more interested in top 5 or top 10 picks. After that I just look at the overall position of a pick. That's just me though, and I get some people prefer the whole first or second round descriptor.

Edmonton has future unprotected 1st round picks that would look good to me.

Hell no Kadri to edmonton.
Same with whitecloud.
Their prospects suck and their picks are too far away.
Maybe some weird three way where ike howard goes to Seattle and we get Shane Wright, but otherwise they can f off.

We could turn this thread into a discussion of whether this is an argument or a contradiction, if you'd like.

2028 unprotected 1st and they have my attention.
The potential upside of that chip could be incredible.
Kadri is nearing his expiry. Let them gut their future to our benefit. We know how those types of deadline pickups work out for them anyways.

I can't. I like Kadri too much.
Anywhere but Edmonton.

I think of it similarly, except that as you get further into the draft you can categorize the picks into broader groups, and it comes down to scouting.
For me, I'd go:
1-3/5
4/6-10
11-20
21-40
40-90
90-160
160-End
With the top 5, it depends on year to year, but in those ranges scouting is typically more important than actual pick order.

I'd rather watch players walk than trade quality players to Edmonton.

I would consider trading them Huberdeau. Watching him pass it back to McDavid after getting a prime feed and great scoring opportunity would be hilarious.
But on a human level, he seems like a good guy, so wouldn't want that for him.

Huberdeau probably gets 80 points playing with McDavid so no.

If he's playing with McDavid and scoring 80 points, that means another Oiler forward isn't getting that chance or scoring those points.
The Oilers remind me of a horrible English boarding house described by George Orwell. New guests always got the best room and the best bed on their first night, to suck them in; then they were moved to shared rooms with dilapidated furniture squeezed into the space any old how. (One room was set up with two undersized beds in an L shape, so that one occupant could not stretch out his legs without kicking the other one in the head.)
As soon as a new Oiler gets moved off McDavid's line to make room for the next shiny toy, he discovers how awful it is to be an ordinary player on that team.

Kadri has been everything we could ask for, I wouldn't trade him to Edmonton because he hasn't done anything to hurt us lol.
He shouldn't be punished because it gets us a better return. No one deserves that.

I kind of liked how the Lindholm to Vancouver trade worked out for Calgary. Yes, we traded them a quality player. That player had a pretty lackluster season (although a few good playoff games) and then walked.
The Flames ended up with Andrei Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Joni Jurmo, and first-round and conditional fourth-round picks in the 2024 NHL entry draft.
Brzustewicz looks like a potential top 4 d-man. The Flames drafted Gridin with the Canucks 1st. Now both teams are rebuilding and Calgary has Brzustwicz and Gridin.
I would like to trade with Edmonton, if we can screw them.
