He hit him in the head, refs should have called it correctly. Did you guys not see how mad Nate was? He came out hitting guys without the puck and took a penalty.
It was called correctly, unless you want game management. And Mackinnon is also a player known for losing his cool.
But the apology corrects it, right? Even Steven now? Not everything needs to be a meessage in this romanticized lore of hockey.
Its not chess. Its a neanderthal sport played by neanderthals and why we love it.
Zero people said the apology corrected it. He got a penalty, Canada scored. That corrected it.
Wilson was dumb. The only message he sent was "if you hit our guy I will start something and you can manhandle me too".

Other teams also only play Canada once, in elimination games. No one will change their play based on fear of Tom Wilson.
Guys who play in the NHL might.
The other day in the Athletic Pronger recounted a story of how when guys were taking liberties in the Olympics he'd remind them how many days it was until he played their team in the NHL.

It felt to me that Wilson initially went after the France player as a response to the hit, but once he got dummied and tossed to the ice he lost his cool and the nonsense thereafter was all him being selfishly embarassed.
I mean he probably expected a fight with punches, looked like the other player was going to fight and then when for the wrestling takedown and then throws his first punch when Wilson is on the ice with the linesman on him.
I get some hate Wilson but if it were Bennett I think some of the takes would be different. I gurantee Nate (Canadas best player IMO) seems that and thinks F yeah these guys have my back.
You already agreed it was a hit to the head. There is no basis for intent, a hit to the head is 5 minutes in the IIHF. Full stop.
It was the wrong call. And it led to more shenanigans
Well, they called it 5 and then reviewed it, so it's not like they didn't consider it.
And IMO the shenanigans occur anyway. Wilson reacted because he was hit behind the net. And overreacted when he lost the fight.
BTW, it's still not an automatic 5 for a head hit in the IIHF, the rules just allow them to call a major without intent to injure (in the NHL it's either two or a game in ITI is found). https://www.europesays.com/us/579963/

I think he would have still done the same thing if a major was called. Gauranteed no one on the Canada squad has a problem wiith what he did. Actually think the 2 min was ok. A bit debatable.
I often punch my wife in the face but apologize right after.

Come on now...the other guy wrestled him down and then decided to throw his first punch AFTER he was down with the linesman invovled. Wilson tried to return the favor and the guy lays on the ice covering his head...then gets up with the come at me gestures.
We have replays these days.

Not true at all, he threw punches while standing as well. But he was stronger as well and threw Wilson down. Did he continue? Yup, for a few seconds, and so did Wilson after he was on the ice. Did Wilson get embarrassed and try to re-engage after they were separated? Yup.
Wilson was an ass here. Whether his teammates liked it or not. If anything he looked unintimidating.

Dude, nobody "lost a fight" here...he wrestled him down and then punched him in the back of the head and then flopped and turtled. Then the come at me gesture...nobody squared up and had a fight here.

My only complaint about the Wilson 'fight' was that he was clearly trying to goad the player to draw a penalty but he let his NHL instincts kick in and dropped his gloves, you can tell once he throws the gloves off he doesn't really know what to do.

Ciron hit him with two jersey jab lefts before throwing him down. Wilson continues to squirm up so he hits him again. Wilson just wasn't strong enough.

You obviously have a ridiculous bias as a Wilson hater...you're champion. He wanted no part of an actual fist fight. Guy is big, probably can't fight. He grabbed the jersey with two hands and pulled Wilson down...hit him in the back of the head when he was down and then flopped and turtled when Wilson came back at him. We have video and photo evidence. Maybe a smart move but he didn't win any fights today.

I don’t hate Wilson. I was just sharing my views on the play. I can see from your multiple edits to this post and various responses thereafter to others that you’re quite pro Wilson and view the scrum much differently than I do, and that’s ok.
I mean, I am not a Wilson fan at all but
I guess Tkachuk won the fight against Kassian too
Like I said the guy is huge...he grabbed the jersey and went for the takedown, he wanted no part of an actual fist fight as evidenced by his world class flop and turtle afterwards.
They have amazing soccer jerseys. They have beautiful colours to have the best jerseys around but I guess whomever the designer was spent time on the bigger countries.
Anyway, what the heck is Ron Maclean doing with a hockey stick? The guy looks so out of place with it on screen. He keeps coming out with it each game.
