So you have a voter registration card? Going to be interesting to see whether you have the right to vote, being as you have no residency and at best would be considered an ex-patriot. You know that you must have established residency to be eligible to vote in a State, and must be able to prove residency to cast an absentee ballot? Federal law dictates that you must provide a valid drivers license from your State of residence and a valid Social Security to register. You'll excuse my curiosity, as voter fraud is a big problem in these here parts, especially with all the illegals, and those who go through the proper channels to earn their citizenship and voting rights take them pretty seriously.

According to my knowledge, and correct me if I'm wrong....the Uniformed And Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act allows any...

U.S. citizens who reside outside the United States.

To vote via absentee ballot.

The following are voting residency guidelines for citizens residing outside the U.S. Your "legal state of residence" for voting purposes is the state you last resided immediately prior to your departure from the U.S. This right extends to overseas citizens even though they may no longer own property or have other ties to their last state of residence and their intent to return to that state may be uncertain.

AFAIK, people who have no official state of residency cast their presidential ballot in the District of Columbia--which is a bit like kissing your sister, if you're a righty! Azure, you should probably make sure that you're on the voter rolls soon. Although technically all Americans have the "right" to vote, that right is frequently curtailed by regulations on when you have to be registered to vote, which varies from state to state. It's almost never the case that you can cast a ballot without already being a registered voter, which is quite different from Canada.

And Lanny--I've been in F-1 status all this time--a Non-Resident Alien, so those years don't count toward even a green card, let alone citizenship. My wife just started a postdoc at UPenn, so we'll be changing our visa status to J-1 and J-2 after 12 months--but I think we actually have to be H-1B before we can apply for a green card, and then Resident Aliens for a while before we can apply for citizenship.

I really hope we're back in Canada before all of that happens.

Unless you're uniformed, you do not fall under the auspices of this law. You still need to have an established residence to register to vote.

Of course this is no where near as "detrimental" as misspeaking and calling the leader of Canada "the President" to some, but it might be just a tab bit more important in the big picture. Certainly the claims are bogus, but most troubling is the frequency at which the candidate will use the events of 9/11 to his political benefit. Hopefully the voters have had enough of this practice from the current administration and will want to move away from the scare mongering and invocation of 9/11 as a badge of honor from a political standpoint.

My point about Obama, which you missed, was never a Democrat - Republican thing. I know it is dufficult for you to comprehend that but give a try. The point was that Obama is making mistakes and his principle rival, Clinton, will eat him alive. And she will.
