I guess sure, it's true that there are activist groups that raise funds to pay expenses for demonstrations, but most of it is paid out of pocket the demonstrators aren't making money from it especially when you consider the unpaid volunteer time they put in. And the vast majority of demonstrators do not associate with activist groups.

It's not really a lot different than the trucker convoy in Ottawa that terrorized the residents there. The vast majority were there on their own dime, but there were organizations donating funds to keeps them there.

I think the reason the myth of the "paid protester" is so persistent among MAGA types is because they are all so selfish and totally lacking in empathy for other people that they simply can't comprehend why someone would demonstrate for a cause unless there's something in it for them. Like their brains just can't fathom why a US-born straight white man would join an anti-ICE protest since the fascist goon squad isn't coming for him, so clearly the only possible explanation is that someone must be paying him to be there.
