As we can see in this thread, people can't even wait until the bodies are cold to use mass murders as outlets for their antagonism for political and cultural foes. We even had someone turn the benign sentiment of "thoughts and prayers" into a shot against people with religious faith.

You're a ghoul (we all like this word now, I've noticed).
12 year old Maya Edmonds lays in critical condition, shot in the head and neck, and her mother is on facebook literally asking for people's prayers.
You wouldn't make that post above on her facebook page - there's no reason to make it here. Just because you're not religious, doesn't mean you need to be a complete and utter piece of ####.

Are prayers more efficient at treating patients than medicine, or have we gone back 200 years as a society or something?

No they are not. Good thing it's not a choice between the two.

In this case, both apply, as medicine and science are being used to hopefully save this girl, and the mom (and maybe family?) are trying to support themselves through what is imporant to them - prayers, believing in God, etc.
I think we can all be adults in here and recognize that even if we don't belive in religion/God/prayer, it still helps some people through difficult times.

Then go pray?
There's a reason people mock the "thoughts and prayers" thing. For years we've seen gun violence in a America with nothing but a little thought and a little prayer, those don't do anything to prevent anything. So pray for 12 year old Maya Edmonds but don't act like that will prevent this from happening again.

If this is genuine, though I doubt it is considering your posting history, then I sincerely hope you internalize it and apply it to your own approach before sharing bigoted views and laughing at people taking issue with it in the future.
While I understand religion is not in the same class as gender or race and there are legitimate criticisms to be made, people would do well generally to remember that there are actual people within the innocent groups they pick on and abuse. I think remembering that, and considering whether you’d say it to someone’s face, is worthwhile.

The aspect of this that stands out the most to me given what we know at the moment is how his victims were around the age was when they chose to transition.
It really reminds me of Sandy Hook which is just layers of darkness on incomprehensible darkness.

Disturbing video of the gunman on social media, laughing strangely.
Apparently was known to police, who were called to the house a few times.

“Disturbing” seems a little extreme considering the video is of an entirely different person, very obviously, who looks to be doing Joaquin Phoenix Joker cosplay.
I think it’s probably best to generally stick to official information. But especially for people who will believe literally anything they’re told on social media at face value without thinking about it at all.
As a reminder, along with trotting out some random person as the shooter (again), “social media” has gotten the name wrong, the names of family members wrong, victims wrong, etc.
There is nothing you need to learn about the shooter today that you can’t learn down the line. Certainly not so much that you just believe anything to say you learned something.

Interesting to acknowledge that they transitioned but to also misgender them in the same sentence.

Has there been any acknowledgement from Canadian athletes at the Olympics? I haven't seen anything.

I didn't hear anything from the athletes personally, but the TV crew mentioned it during the slopestyle competition. One of the competitors was from Mackenzie and they used that as an interjection to mention the incident. The towns are 3 hours apart, but in that part of the country, it's like being neighbours.

“Earlier in the week, McDonald said that the shooter had previous interactions with police.
“Police have attended that residence in the past, approximately a couple of years ago, where firearms were seized under the criminal code,” he said.
“I can say that at a later point in time, the lawful owner of those firearms petitioned for those firearms to be returned and they were.”
McDonald also said they do not believe any of the victims were targeted.
“This, suspect, was, for lack of a better term, hunting,” he said.
“They were prepared and engaging anybody in, everybody they could come in contact with.””

I think we deserve to know the whys, and who's in terms of returning these firearms that ended up in the hands of a clearly mentally distrubed person.
This isn't just about banning a few more fire arms, that pretty much solves nothing. The mechanics of how those guns got into the shooters hands has to be openly investigated.

I saw a report that the firearms used in the commission of the crime were not the weapons taken by the RCMP. The RCMP were unsure where they came from. Very unusual, and I hope they can find out how and where they came from. Either way once guns are taken away for "mental health" or really any reason I don't think they should ever be given back. Find ways to have less guns in people's homes not more.
