I'd say Vladar was well worth a 3rd.

Regardless, unless you are a player who is drafted in the top 10 or so, you're going to have warts to your game. It typically becomes worse the further down the ladder you go.
It's all about how receptive you are as a player and how much you want to be the best you can be when you're in a place like Wyttenbach is. The fact he's already out there saying he needs to get stronger, improve his conditioning and improve his 200 ft game speaks volumes.

The Flames have been solid at drafting for many years now. Their reputation of being awful at drafting still follows them, as they definitely had a long patch from the mid-90s to the late 2000s where they were horrendous. They began to turn it around with Backlund, then Brodie, then Gaudreau, and things seems to have snowballed since then, where now we are getting a solid and varied group of prospects at each draft.

I think Button has been around as long as he has, and through numerous GMs, because he probably has a decent track record of identifying players. The Flames may not always get the player, but I get the general sense that they correctly identify those players. I would love to be a fly on the wall at the drafts or sit and hear some draft day stories after he is done.

My theory is that Button has always run a great scouting department. Every time a new GM comes in, Button shows the ranked list that they produced for each draft and the GM thinks "Wow! I wish we picked those guys. Our team would be so good. You can keep the job." Then, for some reason, they trade the draft picks for Brandon Bollig instead.

Then Conroy got in the GM's chair, and of course he's known Button for a long time. And he must have said something to the effect of, ‘We've got Picasso on our staff here. Let's give him some freaking paint!’

They also seemed to do well when they went for the philosophy of drafting for hockey sense and skill. Speed is a nice bonus as well, but that paid dividends and keeping our picks has brought us a haul. He’ll, Reschny might be a top centre for us, maybe a Bergeron-type where he’s not the clear best forward but helps produce with the talent around him. I’m sure there’s a better comparison.

Can't find draft steals if you pawn off all your bullets for a bunch of mediocre players.

Oof, what a brutal list, I would argue that the 3rd for Vladar trade we got our value out of that one too but ultimately that’s a brutal list. Tregiving at his finest haemorrhaging picks and organizational stability for a bunch of meh.

Feels good to be on the reverse of some of those trades now though. The Lindholm to Vancouver trade is like the opposite of the Hamonic trade.

The Flames were definitely late adopters to the new NHL and getting away from drafting for "truculence". They seemed to be trying to counter the clutch and grab era well after it ended, and they were pretty awful at drafting during the clutch and grab era.

I fully support having as many bullets in the chamber as possible as far as draft picks go, but objectively speaking, trading 3 firsts, 2 seconds and a smattering of mid/late rounds picks in a 7 year window while trying to compete is not that bad. Look at all the competitive teams right now and how many picks they have. We were just complaining that Vegas and Dallas and all these teams don't have the picks or prospects to offer for our top players. It's very common.

Trouble is is other than toffoli the return was all bottom six and not a stephan yelle in the group. Out if that many picks a few viable nhl’rs should have been had. Hated tre by the time he left for this exact reason.

Not to derail the point, because the point is awesome, but I was surprised to see Holloway on there, so I checked. His D+1 is not really close to 50, it's 42, with a small number of games played to boot (23).
Anyway, most of the other 13 are 1st liners, that is a VERY encouraging list.

When I interviewed Tod for my book - I did an entire chapter on his run here - my first question was a more polite version of "How have you remained through so many GM changeovers?"

These are the worst and had the most detrimental impact. Obviously the Monahan trade as well but that had a bunch of different factors around it. The 3 above were just terrible on all fronts.
