How could anyone, let alone anyone who is trans find this offensive, or dehumanizing?

The article also states that 10 people died in the school. That's wrong.

Hypothetically, (and obviously this is just speculation until there is official confirmation from an authoritative source), let's suppose the shooter was a transgender person. So what? Do the actions of one transgender individual reflect negatively on all transgender people?
And if so, the next time there's a mass shooting event where the shooter is a cisgender straight white male (which, statistically, they almost always are), do we therefore condemn all cishet white men because of the actions of one shooter?

|
CTV printed that before the name was officially released. Every other reliable outlet (and the RCMP) is saying the person's name was Jesse Van Rootselaar. They probably went by both or had a name change at some point, but that's why it's best to wait until the person is officially identified.

Its a narrative and they finally have something that matches the narrative after most mass shootings are done by straight white males

Here's the official word from the RCMP (according to CBC):
Quote:
|
Van Rootselaar identified as a female, but was assigned male at birth. She started transitioning about six years ago. She dropped out of school around four years ago.

Also helps distract from talk about guns. In this case, it sounds like guns were removed from the home in the past in response to a police incident relating to the shooter. But the registered owner of the guns (presumably a parent) petitioned to have them returned and they were. And given that the RCMP is saying the shooter didn't have a PAL, there's a decent chance that those guns were used in the shooting.

Such a tragic tragic event. I hope those in hospital all make it through. My heart goes out to the families who lost children.

It may be relevant in contextualising why someone felt bullied, or isolated, or struggled with mental health, or things like that. Transgender people often need supportive healthcare and barriers for access are problematic and exacerbated by certain groups of people working to and celebrating removing that access to healthcare for them.
But it is certainly not a cause for why this happened, any more than than being white and cisgender male causes the vast majority of school shooters to do what they do. It never is. I truly hope they get to the bottom of why this happened and how it happened, and more effort is put in to ensuring it never happens again. In Canada at least it feels possible, even if unlikely.
The discourse around this elsewhere is disgusting. Often from the same types of people who want access to care stripped from these people and to have them locked away, and instead of reflecting at all on the consequences of making life harder and more miserable for people already struggling, will now push harder than ever to punish this part of the population (and already are).
I feel so awful for the families and friends of the victims and that community. What a horrific thing to go through.

What’s the over/under on long it takes for a Canadian ‘conservative’ politician to come out and condemn transgender people?

What an awful event. Truly heartbreaking. I cannot imagine being the kind of ghoul who'd immediately try to politicize this to fit my existing bigoted agenda. Give your heads a shake

Very tragic and heartbreaking.
I just found out from my mom that a close cousin of hers just moved to Tumbler Ridge from the island a few months ago. My mother contacted her this morning.

Same type of ghoul who would come into this thread and say "this isn't the time to talk about less guns!"

That's quite the list there Tara.
Now do cisgendered white dudes.
Though I agree, we should do more to prevent anyone, including transgender people from committing these types of violence, I'll admit I don't know what the perfect solution is.
But I do know "Deny their existence, and call for their parents to deny the reality of their situation" isn't going to help.
When mass shootings happen in the US the solution coming from conservative politicians always seems to be "More Guns".
Now we have an even dumber solution coming from a conservative politician here in Canada.
"When a member of a marginalized population commits an act of violence, we should try to make the lives of that group even worse!"
