James van der Beek of Dawson's Creek fame.

Only 48, had stage 3 colorectal cancer.

Never watched Dawson creek but varsity blues was awesome and his cameo in Jay and Silent bob strike back is legendary.

Well I was a mopey teen when Dawson's Creek came out and it was basically the peak of mopey teen shows so it'll always have a special place in my heart. RIP to the King of the Creek.

Dawson's Creek and Felicity were quintessential teen dramas growing up.

Really enjoyed him in Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23, where he played himself brilliantly. So sad to pass that young and with a young family.

I never got into Dawson's Creek as I was into my 20's at that time but it was very relevant in its day. RIP.

As a 90s teenager, this makes me sad. Growing up in a small town, all we had to talk about was Buffy and Dawson’s Creek at lunch.

I never watched Dawson's Creek, but I really liked James Van Der Beek in Rules of Attraction when it came out.

I never saw a single episode of Dawson's Creek, but all I know about Van Der Beek is that he was always willing to poke fun at himself and not take himself all that seriously which tells me that he obviously had a decent sense of humour.

I also enjoyed him as Robyn’s Canadian musician boyfriend in How I Met Your Mother.

I got my first colonoscopy a couple weeks ago at 46. They’re recommending screening as early as 45.

It’s not fun prepping for it, but it’s super important. Go get one if you’re over a certain age.

They've changed the protocols in Alberta, you get annual FIT (fecal immunochemical test) starting at 50, a colonoscopy is only done if your FIT result is abnormal or you have a family history.

It's kind of a bummer to hear that. It goes against the consensus in the scientific literature, so I can only assume that it's a cost cutting measure.

Early screening is obviously really important, evident in the Van Der Beek case. It's pretty sad to see him go so young from something that IS very preventable with early screening.

If you have a proactive doctor, they can find enough justification to get you one. But you have to advocate for yourself. My doctor doesn't mess around, and generally believes that NA is way behind in terms of preventative medicine and early detection.

I had mine done a couple years before turning 50. As Cali said, the prep for it is a bit of a wild ride, but well worth getting it done.

Or I did until it went into remission, and now the screening is all non-invasive again.

If you youngsters haven't seen Harold and Maude it is an achingly bitter sweet and caustically funny film about finding acceptance in the world
