His defence will get better. No matter what he'll always be able to play the fourth forward role. His vision and ability to carry the puck are elite.

At 35 (36 by the end of the year). He still could score points but not in discussion for best player in ht league like I bet Makar will be at 28

Surprised Sharks wouldn't be calling about Kyrou or Thomas - feels like they would be a fit.

To Calgary: Makar signed to a 7 year, $140M contract

Makar feels like he’s done well by Colorado, Colorado extracts value “as their own rental” rather than trading him in-season while also doing-right by Makar in sending him where he wants, Flames pay a good price and bring a new hometown hero into the C of Red.

…would be a lovely sports story.
Tkachuk had a year left, Makar would be a pending UFA. There is zero incentive for the Flames to give up that much if Makar is set to sign here. You're mote likely looking at what Leafs got for Marner.

Their playing of that game generates billions of dollars in revenue. The players deserve to get paid. For the best defenceman in the league, I don't see it as that extreme of a salary.

Q. Hughes' contract also runs out at the end of 2027. Could be an interesting off season.

Really? They were interested in Ekblad, Rasmus, Hamilton before. That's a step down, top pair guys to these sort of depth dmen.

For thr Flames, defense and/or goaltending hasn't been an issue, and even with the promotion of Brzustewicz and Kuznetsov, replacing Andersson with Whitecloud, and Parekh rejoining the lineup, defense is not an issue and will continue to get better as the young guys continue to improve. Parkeh has now logged 73 mins with Pachal, 9th for defensive pairing minutes, and they have a 62% xGF%, 2nd best for the team. Any concern with Parekh defensively is seriously overblown.

The Flames defense will be fine through the rebuild and with growth from younger players could be a top defensive unit. They are pretty much hovering at 10th in most major metrics already. 12 less goals against would move them to top 3, hardly an insurmountable feat.

The problem the Flames have is they cannot score. They would need to score 50 goals more to be top 10. That's insane. They've already done a good job addressing scoring with some prospects, but that needs to be the focus this and next draft. Do not draft Verhoeff. Take an elite F. If the Flamea can add some more elite goal scoring, which they easily can through top of the draft this year and next, the team will contend.

Whitecloud to the Sharks would make a crazy amount of sense if I'm Grier.

Reasonable acquisition cost, RD with size, championship experience, still got some prime years left, steady defensive game, can extend him if it's a good match.

Easier said than done this draft if they aren't picking top 2

I feel like if they end up at 3 they shouldn't overthink it and just take Verhoff. Positionally it's a champagne problem but he checks so many other boxes you'd love to have (size, goals, Alberta kid, tight with Reschny, etc).

Then you go trust your scouts to find scoring later in the draft with (hopefully) at least three more selections in the top 40. Finish bottom 5 again the year after and address your centre needs there with what's looking like a good centre group.

Alternatively they could pick Dupont and just build the whole plane out of defense...

I understand why teams want whitecloud, but im not sure why calgary would want to sell him
You need veterans on defense mire than any other position, to help the rookies. Whitecloud is also a good locker room and media guy. He's pretty perfect for the Flames right now.

Yes, but it's pretty easy to sign veteran defenseman in the offseason. They wouldn't need to be great. The Flames signed Scott Hannan for a million bucks back in 2011. Or Engelland in 2014.
In fact, anyone signed could even be flipped at the deadline.

GM must be his roommate or something.

It's expensive to live in the bay area after all.

Easier to ignore them than post about if you don’t believe them
