Now that I'm on the topic, my friend was completely hopeless that the Rangers could rebuild through drafting, because their prospect development track record is just atrocious, as this fan points out. (Although that history is older than Drury era.)

What on earth are you talking about? It's basically the definition of fan that you're interested in your team and what happens around it. Player transfers are some of the biggest events of the regular season, as trades are rare and only happen a few times each season.
Every normal and sane marketing department is extremely happy when the media and fans show interest in the players, and no other organization gets in the way of that.

It’s just weird. Have you ever heard of a ban of interviewing new players? It’s always a puff piece, so why bother? Players even say they look forward to joining the oilers for goodness sake.

I just talked about this with a Rangers fan, and apparently kind of everything.
What they said was that the team and the organization/GM have basically been at war for a couple of years now, and it's at the point where the players are either tuned out or wanting out. That's seen as the main reason why the team has gone from a conference finalist that was supposed to be on the upswing to bottom of the league.
No one wants to be there, but also no one wants to be traded there because these issues are supposedly well known all around the league, while the Rangers are primarily focused on trying to keep a lid on the story instead of fixing thing.
From that I assume banning Greentree from talking to media about the trade happened because the management was worried Greentree would say something bad about being traded there.
Which does sound like an incredibly dysfunctional situation, and I'm sure makes Greentree feel welcomed in "North Korea Rangers", as I recently heard it described.
Rebuilding through draft is the only option Rangers currently have, because most UFA's want to keep their distance, and top players with NTC:s won't waive for them.
...of course the sane move would have been to clean house at the management side, but I guess that's not an option.
I don’t question that NYR isn’t run well. But I doubt Greentree has any real insight into any of that. He is a junior player. Outside of Kings rookie camps, what NHLers has he even met and why would they be talking about NYR.
It is a “control the message” move for sure, but I still don’t think telling a junior player not to comment on a trade means much as far as why the NYR are a bad team this year.

We saw how well Seattle's move to block journalists from asking questions in a post match presser went down. This isn't Nazi Germany, people with functioning brains (granted that excludes some on CP) in modern democracies don't typically appreciate censorship.
Drury is really running that club into the ground, and unless they get some lottery luck it's gonna be quite a few years of pain in New York.

I agree. Though NYR’s press corps are much less deferential than others. Remember Torts and Brooksie?

Some context that seems relevant here is that the reporter in question seems pretty widely known for his significant anti-Rangers slant on everything, and that this has nothing to do with this specific trade as the Rangers have been doing this with all their prospects for years.
I get that they’re a bit of a mess but it may be as simple as them wanting to reduce the pressure or potential for it from a media group known for being “a lot.”
Claims around the culture being so bad that they’re trying to stop prospects from talking because even OHL guys know about it or whatever seem like a bit of fun fantasy but not that realistic.

If it was the Flames I'd think they just don't want the player giving interviews until they've had a good chance to talk things over with him themselves (and give a bit of media training). The Flames have never had a blanket ban as far as I know.
I can't remember the last time when a GM came into a team on the rise, and completely derailed it so spectacularly. Sure, there have been terrible GMs, but what GM has ended up specifically as a cancer to his team?
Riseborough comes to mind in Calgary to be fair - the way he treated some of the players has lasted for ages - Gilmour won a cup here, but he thinks of himself as a Leaf, MacInnis thinks of himself more as a Blue...
Chuck Fletcher? Maybe? Milbury was just a completely idiotic GM who made poor move after poor move, but i don't think he was a 'cancer'.
Drury is not only a bad GM, but he is literally a cancer on that team. I would expect him to be fired this upcoming off-season, but to be honest, I am surprised he isn't already fired. After the Fox and Erixon fiascos, and seeing players lining up to play there sometimes on discounts, I can't say I hate what is happening there right now, however! I am just really surprised he hasn't been fired yet.
Not allowing media to interview him is certainly a weirdly unnecessary decision to make. In hindsight, it is a decision that Calgary should have made when they acquired Ryan Murphy as part of the Eddie Lack deal. I remember Murphy being interviewed and stating that he was looking forward to a fresh start here in Calgary, but then the next day (or shortly thereafter) he got bought-out. I guess he was never informed about the Flames' plans for him. So unless this kid is being moved, I don't see a reason why you would want to prevent him from speaking to the media. That's just weird and unnecessary, and it makes his start with the organization a lousy experience for him, right?

With the new CBA, maximizing the SB to 60% of the TCV; let's go with a Makar example @ $15m/6 yrs;
$9m SB, annually off-season domiciled in Florida, w/$6m AB/CAN annual salary. That equates to $1m annually more in Makar's pocket.

The thought of Makar coming to Calgary is based materially on him wanting to live here. If he spends summers in Florida etc., he is still domiciled in Calgary. He doesn’t get to pick, it’s a question of fact.

It’s not a question of that. If Makar spends any significant part of the offseason here, as well as the hockey season, I understand that he’ll be domiciled in Canada for tax purposes. He can’t just have a bolthole in a state with no state tax that he happens to occupy on July 1. Panarin has more leeway because he has no attachment to California outside of the hockey season.
