- Post Andersson trade, The Athletic has the Flames as the worst team in the league the rest of the way but the Canucks aren't far behind and have built an insurmountable lead.
- Post Panarin trade, the Kings are projected to bump the Oilers from 3rd in the Pacific to wild card #2 and a waste of 7 days with the Avalanche.
- The Maple Leafs sit at 21% to make the playoffs which is wonderful to see.

If the Avs win another cup, he'll be turning 30 my the end of his contact, have 2 cups, a calder, a conn Smyth (possibly two), at least two Norris trophies, and have earned over $50 million.
He may decide that he wants to be closer where his family is from and not have to raise kids in the USA. The fact his wife still works as a teacher in Calgary, suggests that might be the plan. I don't care to dig too much into the players personal lives, but so remember seeing pictures of Makar's cowboy themed wedding. He seems very much like he's not the type to, for example, demand a trade to the rangers.

Makar loves Calgary, loves the Flames, has close family ties, and certainly would love to come home.
But he's also very loyal. Money isn't a priority for him.
It's either Colorado or Calgary. I don't see anything else making sense.
Since it's only a 2 team race, there's a reasonable chance.

The Flames will also be going into a brand new building and should be a team on the upswing with tons of young talent coming up.

Plus they are going to flood the trade market with some quality players…

In 2022 when the Avs won the Cup, first thing he did when he got his time with it was take the Cup rafting down the Bow River, and was also partying it up at Stampede with it too... the kid absolutely loves this city.

Makar’s wife is a teacher in Calgary? That definitely makes things interesting. Things are shaping up to be potentially pretty great for Calgary in a few years.

This is the thing, and this is what Boomer and Pinder are (from what I can gather) hinting at knowing.
Maybe it’ll finally be our time to win in one of these scenarios, because we’ve lost on enough of them.
It’s one of the reasons to be aggressive as F when it comes to dealing away veterans now.
Amass the inventory of picks and prospects to the degree that when the Avs potentially know he’s either an Av or a to-be Flame, the Flames have the assets for a sign and trade ala Tkachuk.
Stock the armoury. 2027 is the year to go to war.

He filled the cup with Slurpee from a local 7-11 too

I mean with the amount of cap space flames will have. They could totally offer Makar a huge payday.

Why can't Makar just go to free agency? No trade. Keep all our picks and prospects, profit.

Boomer is saying he thinks there is a chance it could happen. Pinder said he sees Colorado paying Makar whatever he wants.
They don't know anything on this that isn't public knowledge. Makar loves Calgary, but I still see him being loyal and staying on the Avs.

And I thought I was special for hearing rumblings about Cale Makar through local connections, someone in his family is coworkers with someone in my family sort of thing. Come to think of it, probably half the board does.

I will be surprised if Makar isnt extended on July 1 or very near that date.
Probably 14 a year or so for 8 years.

If he extends like that on Colorado, he'll probably have to spend much of his career in a rebuild. Not even sure if that makes sense for Colorado.
Besides Makar, a lot of the key guys in Colorado are already in the 30-34 range. I didn't see them being the team they are now in 3ish years. Even MacKinnon will not be the same player by the time he's 34.

If Makar goes to free agency, he’s probably the first $20M+ AAV player.

When was the last time a player of his quality went to free agency? Marner is probably the closest, and he still ended up being a sign and trade despite people pretty much knowing where he was going - and Makar is a significant tier above Marner. Makar may want that 7th year on his deal. 6 may not be a deal breaker though, as a 34 year old elite defenceman as a UFA he could be in line for another big contract.
