It just seems strange that McKenna, with his family, would go out and pursue a drunken idiot. I think far more likely that the other guy was either waiting for him, or they happened to run into each other and started chirping again.
From the probable cause affidavit, you only really get the side of the victim (air quotes?) so I get why McKenna would be charged, but I think there will be much more to the story.
Hit him twice on his feet and knocked him down with those two punches. No further actions reported after the kid got knocked down.
Maybe I'm coming off as an apologist maybe I'm not, but if you throw a couple shots someone's way in a situation, I don't think anybody's expecting the results.
I don't know if McKennas had martial training of any sort other than being a hockey player but generally two standing shots don't have that much damage associated to them unless you're bigger than your opponent, or Bruce Lee.
Real talk though, I don't see much of anything coming from this. I've seen worse and know less was done about it. But being a brand name is gonna cost him a few bucks.
Jaw broken on both sides and teeth knocked out. That seems like a lot of damage from two standing punches.
Maybe he fell over, but people don't normally fall onto their jaw, unless he fell straight forward? I know two people who lost/broke teeth after hitting the concrete but that was from falling forward while riding bikes.
I can't discern if this tough guy narrative is just a general belief from many folks in this thread, which is astounding to me, or if it's just defending a potential Flame at all costs?
That seems to be a big part of it. Even before this incident some folks on CP were extremely defensive about criticism of McKenna's play, to a degree I've never seen for an undrafted prospect before.
I expect if the Flames were in playoff spot, or McKenna had already been drafted by the Canucks or Blues, he wouldn't have nearly as many defenders here. But 'could wind up a Flame' seems to have led some fans to circle the wagons.

I am curious how Penn State will handle this. They paid the kid a lot of money to play there. One outcome, they say, is that he was only charged, not convicted, so nothing will happen until the court rules or there is a final outcome. They only need a couplle months to finish out the season. And presumably, he plays in the final four. I can't imagine an American school has a code of conduct that would suspend a player for being charged. That assumes guilt, which is bad. Then they slow-play the trial, if there even is one, until April and hope for a quick resolution before the draft.
Alternatively, the defence lawyers put on a full-court press to have the charges thrown out asap, or push for an expedited trial if they think they can make out a defence of self-defence for themselves or others. Or, ITA again, they say they will plead out to whatever misdemeanour on the books that will not follow him forever.
We also need to remember that cops always charge high, so there is room to come down if the investigation turns up something else. I am stunned that no videos have been released yet showing the altercations with this guy. We will see what turns up. I wonder if the cops even asked for the video from the bar? I bet his counsel has already, which may show more details.

Wonder what happens if Flames get to draft him…and then find out he can’t cross the border. The defenders will look as dumb as the GM. Or is it the other way around?
Was curious to see what has changed and what hasn't, so here's the topic when Flames prospect Michael Ferland was charged with aggravated assault after breaking a guy's orbital bone outside a bar in Cochrane.
Confirms there was a verbal altercation between the two groups. Ugly situation all around and Mckenna needs to grow up and learn from this moving forward after he inevitably pleads down to a misdemeanor and cuts a cheque for a civil settlement.
That being said, if what's alleged is what indeed happened that's a tough look for the 21 year old that got hit:
"Oh man you needed surgery that's awful! I heard he was an athlete, was he some huge lineman? Had to be huge to do that to you."
"Uhh naa he's a 170lb guy that just turned 18"
"Huh...damn, was he just a psycho who snapped for no reason?"
"Uhh well I may have called his mom a whore in front of his family"
"Huh, you're kinda a bad guy eh?"
Probably trying to make a name for himself and did. On an international level.

This isn’t really any different than the poster who said he was getting a pass for being “white.”
Sometimes it’s OK to accept that people don’t view things the same way you do and that it doesn’t always mean there is some underlying group-based motive a bunch of them are in on. You have people here who have never even seen a fight in person, people who claim they go out and never see them at a bar, and people who have been in them or worked at bars and have seen 100s. Some people have and bring different experiences and have different opinions because of it.
It might not be easier to accept your reality isn’t the only one than it is to just assume it’s people blindly circling the wagons because he might be a Flame, but it certainly gives people a level of credit you’d want people to give you.

This is a nothingburger. Amazing the scenarios we all drum up. Leaving from an alumni event with his mom and teammates and other families and a drunk moron accosts them. Again. Apperently the football group of fans not happy with the notoriety/ fame hockey is now getting so they let them hear it. Why it may not be all awesome to send these youg bucs to this world. Guarantee i am a good source of info on this matter. He laid the kid out who is now trying to get paid.

Not much comment on the legal situation without more information.
It sounds like there is partial video of the fight, and I would guess video of the proceeding incident in the bar, or at least some pretty high quality witness statements from the staff. So I think it's likely enough that a lot of facts will emerge in the next 5 months that will reveal a lot of information before the draft.
On it's face i do think this increases the odds that McKenna gets drafted by the Flames a little bit.
Lottery dependent, with the Flames seem likely to draft between 1 and 4, with 3 being the most likely outcome at this point. With McKenna being moderately forward about the idea of playing for his childhood team being appealing, and possible legally issues lingering, it could be enough for the top 1-3 teams to look at one of the other few top rated guys, I don't think it will have a big effect, but assuming other view Stenberg, Verhoeff or even Reid in the same range as McKenna this is 2 x's against him while the Flames only have the one, maybe Vancouver / St Louis.... are 10% less likely to pick McKenna over the other guys now, and Calgary is only 5% less likely, pending a lot more information about the incident.
I'd just like to thank Gavin McKenna for going out and getting himself arrested, thereby giving hockey fans something to bicker about during the awful dog days between the start of the Olympic break and the actual Olympics. Sir, your sacrifice shall not be forgotten!

The US justice system? The country being ran by a racist, senile pedophile? Yeah that's gonna go well for an 18 year old Indigenous Canadian kid.
Valid point, although the US also has a lot.of tradition for "boys will be boys" and "let's not ruin a young mans future", especially when it comes to young top athletes.
I'm any case, I don't see the court of public opinion really improving the situation.

There are a lot of football players in the NCAA caught doing way worse things and they go on to careers in the sport.

I'm assuming they were American citizens though. McKenna being a Canadian there on a visa could be deported and have trouble entering the U.S. if he is convicted. They have to find a way to plead down from the felony charge, which may be possible or even easy, but if it isn't 100% certain by draft day, I think it could affect his draft position. The U.S. isn't messing around these days with non-Americans committing crimes in the U.S. I could see them making an example of him.

Either he stays at Penn State or goes back to Medicine Hat.
It's really not gonna effect him aside from missing out on a good conditioning/strengthening program for a couple more months.
Other than that, unless he's sentenced to time (likely the least-likely outcome), it's not gonna effect his draft position at all.
