A big part of Vegas identity was a big mean defense, and that's gone now.
Pietrangelo, Hague, Whitecloud, and Martinez have been replaced.
Theodore, Hanifin, and Andersson is not really an intimidating top 3 IMO

Question on the new playoff cap rules: Does retention factor in or is the full AAV for each player used?

Kind of stinks we had to retain on Rasmus as he was so much below market already. Hopefully there was a meaningful difference in the return due to that.

Don't think Vegas could have done the deal otherwise.
As it stands they had to throw in a very serviceable Whitecloud, but without the $2.25M covered, not sure who they jettison to get to that $5M level.

Vegas only has 18 regulation wins in 55 games which is the same as the Flames. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I'd rather they keep struggling and end up like last year's Devils or worse. I'm okay with the Oilers winning the Division so long as they fail in the playoffs. I'd much rather a first in the 16 to 20 range and a higher second in place of a 32 pick this year and a 28 first. If we get the 28 first hopefully it's because something went rotten there and it's them kicking next year's top 10 pick to 28 making that second in the top 40 and the subsequent 28 pick early.
I know complete fantasy. But the devil always collects on those who sell their soul for short term glory.

Statistically speaking, dramatic effort is not needed to get lower in the standings as the schedule will probably do the work for us. Although, catching the Canucks for the bottom spot will be challenging no matter what with that 8 point gap. Hopefully the Canucks win a bunch of games on their easier schedule.

Bottom 5 guarantees you a top 8 pick. I doubt there are 8 franchise guys in the draft. You want to be as low as you can be.
In the last 10 games - since its easy to get-
Winnipeg 5-3-2
Calgary 4-4-2
St. Louis 3-6-1
Chicago 2-6-2
Vancouver 2-7-1 (included for the sake of it)
NY Rangers 2-8-0
We've gained points on all but 1 team in the mix for 2nd worst.
We've gained 6 points on the Rangers who are now below us. 3 points on the Blues who are now below us. 4 points on Chicago who are now 1 point ahead of us.
You need to be realllly bad. The schedule helps, but the Flames need to be bad as possible so you don't end up with Matt SAvoie instead of Logan Cooley or Alexander Holtz instead of Tim Stutzle.

Last 10 games include games before Andersson was traded, so they aren't necessarily representative of what we can expect going forward. Flames are 1-3-2 since the trade, which is about equivalent to the Canucks' points% over the past 10 games.

Some interesting comments on the 2nd intermission panel about the deal. Was all but done with Boston. 7 years x 9 million, but there was some NTC hiccups etc. and took too long, Rasmus got annoyed and that's when he said he wasn't talking extension. Moved to Vegas 4 hours later.
Looks like Francis has more coming out tomorrow after an interview with Rasmus.

Also that Conroy really had to dig to get the first rounder from Vegas.
It sounds like the teams went silent on Rasmus which was what annoyed him.

Considering how many people expected him to sign with Vegas immediately, you might get at least half of that wish.

Francis will have an article on sportsnet.ca up later today, he got an exclusive interview with Ras in which he alluded Ras was pretty open about the whole process. I'll post it here if it's online soon.
I'm pretty miffed that Andersson granted permission for other teams to offer up an extension for him then when he got offered market or above market pulled the rug from Conroy, but perhaps the interview will shed some more light. Obviously it's gonna be from his perspective but Francis is pretty good at being objective.

Panarin had 25 more teams (i.e. all of them) blocked. Conroy and Drury were not playing with the same hand. That's not to diminish what Conroy got, I believe he did well in the end. Just not apples to apples.

I’ve been so impressed with Whitecloud, he’s been an absolute stud since he came here. Him and Bahl are such an awesome pairing. Log huge minutes, don’t give up anything at all really and move the puck out.
Love that pairing

Francis interview with Ras
On Boston:
Quote:
The emotional wall he hit came mid‑January when an apparent deal, complete with the framework for what Elliotte Friedman reported was a seven-year extension worth $63 million in Boston, muddied his mind during a Flames road trip through Chicago.
“The offer came in with a few parts adjusted I didn’t like with trade protection, and then there was another three days of hearing nothing,” said Andersson, who then suited up against the Islanders for what he, and many others, assumed was his final home game as a Flame, as he high-fived every teammate and saluted the crowd afterwards.
“It was a mental grind for me for three days. You keep checking your phone, and wondering when it’s going to happen, and then I woke up Sunday and I was like, ‘I can’t do this anymore, I have to focus on myself and not everything around me.’ I was still pretty proud of the way I played those two games, but on Sunday (Jan. 18) we told them, ‘let’s hold off on all extension talks right now.’”
|
So provides some context to why he ultimately decided to pull the plug on a sign and trade. I still find it odd that Boston went so cold after offering that much money.

I had no idea Whitecloud was as good as he is. He’s been playing 22 to 24 minutes a night and he’s absolutely not the player I thought he was. My first reaction to the trade was that Whitecloud’s value might be something like a fourth or maybe third round pick at best. Taking that into consideration, I voted for “breakeven”.
Now I think he easily gets you a 2nd+. I wonder what the vote would look like now after everyone has watched him play for us? My vote now definitely goes up to modest win or between modest win and a home run.

I watched some VGK highlights the first game after the trade and the pbp guys were not happy to lose Whitecloud.
