It is pretty much Ferland, but higher profile.

Would a misdemeanor conviction be a risk to being able to cross the border in the future?
I know technically, they can deny you entry for any reason they want and even not enforce things they don't want to, but just curious about how something like this might be handled.
Anecdotal, but I went to a game in Detroit before with a friend of a friend. I didn't know the guy that well, and when we were crossing at the border, they found out he had a DUI conviction in the U.S. from several years before. The border agent lectured him for a while and said he 'could' deny entry, but eventually let us through. He also said that if it was reversed and he was an American trying to enter Canada after conviction here, the Canadian agents would almost definitely deny entry because they apply things more rigidly. Not sure if that was true or not. He then told him to apply for a pardon, and he would likely get it because it was an older and minor offense (he barely blew over, and there was no accident).

I am dumbstruck at the number of posters who think it is perfectly fine - and indeed praiseworthy - to resort to violently attacking someone for (checks notes)… words. Words of any form. Yes they’re offensive and insulting, if true…and that is all. Wow.

Ya, this kid is pretty soft if that's all it took. He's going to hear a lot worse in the NHL.
He should have taken a page from Bedard's playbook and just ignored the noise.

Well, I am just going to wait for more information. If it was just him sticking up for his mom, and it was only a single punch, then big whoop really. However, if he was on top of the other kid and had to be pulled-off because he couldn't stop, then that's a different thing altogether, right? Not going to make up my mind one way or the other here.
I am sure he won't get 20 years. I doubt he gets 6 months. I bet charges will be dropped and/or it will be handled out of court. Probably not going to amount to anything, unless there is more information than what has been covered already.
At this point, I would still pick him 1st. Ferland is a good example. Another one is Brett Sutter - remember he got traded after that incident where he punched a cabbie while drunk. I don't think he got a felony out of it, however. Now he is the head coach of the Wranglers, and nobody is holding it against him. I don't think this will impact his draft.
However, the above is true only to the point where the information before this post is accurate. If it comes out that he started it, and/or he went on top of him and punched his face in 15 times or something crazy like that, then things obviously change. Doesn't sound like that is what happened here. So from my standpoint, I don't hesitate drafting him 1st overall unless new information comes to light, or it seems like he may really end up getting more than a year's worth of jail time. That would obviously change it.
Hope the kid is ok - and if the above information is true, hope that kid smartens up too. Hopefully this doesn't screw up McKenna's life too (which I doubt it would at this point). Still draft him 1st at this point.

Not an expert but we know there's some NHL players Watson, Galchenyuk, with some sort of minor conviction and they still play. I expect the team would get them some sort of visa or preclearance.
If there is a negative effect, I would be using it as a reason for a negotiated, non-criminal conviction, resolution. Which is likely available.

I mean, if it is true the guy he knocked out kept chirping about his mom, I would say he deserved it. Actions have consequences, and he found out.

Let this be a lesson to NCAA bound players that if you're not on the Football or Basketball team...you don't matter. Junior Hockey towns in Canada sweep this stuff under the rug.

Never thought I’d be agreeing with Rhett but here we are. It’ll probably end up being a plea deal on the felony charges and then he’ll send the kid 50k to leave him alone

Don’t kid yourself. Teams in the range of 5-12 are probably licking their chops that he may drop to them.

He’s not slipping that far, IMO. This only costs him a spot or two, depending on the team.
If the Flames win the lottery, I think they still take him 1st (or atleast, I’d hope they would).

Not sure your upbringing or where you're from. But with my parents and where I'm from and how I was raised, you say something about someone's sister or mom- you get your teeth fed to ya.

I would pick Stenberg at this point. Similar upside without all the risks.
We don't know what happened here, but if some dude was chirping about his mom and he was the one that turned it physical, it still points to a lack of maturity and composure.

Way too many people jumping to conclusions here. Let's see the evidence. The kid will get his day in court.

There is also value in turning the other cheek and removing yourself from that situation.
Fights can lead to all sorts of really bad stuff:
- Jail
- Civil suits
- One of the people getting seriously hurt and/or killed
There's not much upside in throwing the first punch, but there's plenty of downside.
