Interesting given the significant drop in US traffic over the past 12 months.

The opposite, in my opinion. They've been turning it up overall and to even add anything in the current nasty transborder climate is notable.
They hired their own ground crew so we knew more was coming - they've increased Chicago, increased Dallas, added Charlotte and now NY.

Yes, and it starts earlier this year than it did last year. May instead of June.
In the last few years AA has been adding more seats to YYC than UA/DL combined.

US travel to the Rockies is exploding. It's better and cheaper than comparable US destinations. Like 50% or more cheaper.
So this flight is more a route that's about getting people into Calgary to get to Banff, and not a route about getting Calgarians elsewhere.
It's a bit like the direct flights from Japan 10 or 20 years ago. Many may not recall when going to Banff there was a massive Japanese population of tourists, like basically every tourist was either Japanese or German. Now you see more people from Mexico or Brazil then either Germany or Japan.

Did it leave or was it just hard to find?

That might be the greater trend over a number of years but in the last 12 months YYC transborder numbers are down by a significant margin and nothing is exploding by any objective metric. Transborder seats will be down this summer overall due to significant cuts by WestJet

Does that measure just Americans, or total border crossings by all nationalities?
My info came from hotels in Banff-Lake Louise, which are seeing a big increase in guests from the US and is a major factor in price increases.

I don't believe Transborder stats break down by nationality, simply a measurement of pax coming to/from the USA.

So they could both be correct. I think it's pretty likely that historically more Canadians have flown out of YYC to the US than American tourists inbound. And it's not even just Calgarians - lots of people from Grand Prairie, Ft Mac, Saskatchewan etc go to Vegas/Florida/Disneyland, I think probably more than US tourists go to Regina...
So a 30% drop in outbound Canadians would be way more people than a 30% increase in Americans going to Banff (so transborder traffic would still be down) but that woule still be a big increase for Banff hotels.

It is the total number of human beings boarding an airplane at a Canadian airport destined for a United States airport, and vice versa.
Public numbers do not differentiate, but internally at airlines those numbers are closely tracked and who is going in what direction and how it's trending is well known.
