Just to be Bearish for a moment, Jiri/Sandman/Freeway etc; what is your trust in @nickiacoban's ability to evaluate talent?

He isn't writing them off. He just placed the player in the most statistically likely outcome based on his model.

For example:

I assume those odds went lower due to his injury this year. Other guys like Basha and Battaglia looked like sure thing middle 6 forwards as well, but had a bit of a down year this year.

Brzustewicz have too many NHL games to be considered?

I wonder what his model said about Kuznetzov before this season?

When I give people surveys out of 10 I find most people always pick 7. The people reading the survey think 7 is pretty good. So I do not add a 7. You have to be a 6 or an 8. I'd like to see which direction the 7s (fence sitters) are actually leaning!

A lot of that 15% spent the first half of the year arguing that the Flames were not rebuilding and that they were trying to win so at least now they think the Flames are rebuilding

They were arguing last week that the Flames weren't rebuilding until the yes or no poll ended that argument

I would say in the world of what have you done for me lately, I need to give Conroy and the Flames a lot of credit for moving the rebuild significantly in the right direction in the past month. It basically removed some of the nerves that were made tense due to some of the media hits from Maloney. After a 2-9-2 October they battled back to .500 when the New Year rolled in and in a season where that was still in the mix for a playoff spot.

Since:
- 4-9-2 in the new year bottom 5
- Andersson traded for good value
- Gridin, Brzustewicz, Parekh all on the roster
- Kadri and Coleman trades seem likely
- talks of Weegar and other vets being available for trade.

This looks to be a true blow it up season as the rebuild has potential to shift to a 8-9 for me.

Moving at least one of Kadri/Coleman/Weegar would bump up my vote too.

This being year 1 of at least two bottom out years is very important for the rebuild, IMO. Moving more of these pieces will all but ensure that.

I had feared not moving Ras in the summer would prevent the other trade pieces from being moved this year. If they move 1-2 more it's about as stripped down a rebuild as I would have wanted, beyond what I realistically expected.

I would be curious what the results would look like if we run the poll again a day or two after the trade deadline. I think that is the second last stage gate for this year (last being at the draft).

this rebuild is shaping up to be unique.

Hockey team that was full of above average players, looked to be built to succeed, but didn't ... with contract terms due in a similar time range creating an exodus of talent for futures in a tight window.

Not sure we see that all that often.

Gonna give it a 7 for the following reasons:
  • Shipping out / shopping all the correct vets so far (even ones with term remaining)
  • Didn't publicly announce a rebuild or that they're mailing the season in
  • Starting to give the kids some more responsibility and ice time
  • Drafting prospects who shoot first (with a wicked shot too!) and ask questions later
  • Good young pieces in place already
  • Collecting quality draft capital (consistently picking 3 times in the first two rounds in the past couple drafts and the next couple upcoming drafts too, sometimes even with two 1sts)

Especially that last part, if Connie & scouts can homerun on even half of those extra 1sts then we should have a good core for years to come. Gridin and Parekh look decent already playing NHL minutes, Reschny and Potter are doing very good in college. Even have Wyttenbach who's looking like a late round steal.

^^ That's pretty much how I see the prospects. Though I notice he seems to have already graduated Brzu and Kuz. So the defence isn't as bare as it might appear from the chart.

Agreed. Once Kadri and/or Coleman and/or Weegar/Whitecloud are traded, I'm happy to shift my vote considerably higher.
Would love another poll after trade deadline.

Which is kind of interesting how things work. You give the Flames credit for moving things in the right direction significantly in the right direction when it could be argued that a lot of what's happened was always the plan and likely outcome. Putting the record aside for now, Conroy's always been waiting for the right value for Ras, Kadri and Coleman trades were always likely (more so Coleman), Brz and Gridin on the roster were due to injuries while Parekh was always penciled in. The poor record is a direct result of the Flames losing their best player and biggest voice.

I guess what I'm trying to suggest here is nothing ever changed on the Flames side, whether we're talking about Conroy or other people in management. The plan has always been the plan, and needs time to be executed if Conroy wanted to extract the most value.

I agree. It is the nature of the NHL that trades will happen closer to the deadline, it is just that way it is. Unless you are a player like Hughes and to a smaller extent Andersson, teams will aways take these trades to the deadline. patience is just part of being a seller. Otherwise you end up immortalized in a Bob Mackenzie tweet.

At the end of the day doing something and saying something are 2 different things and the flames have done something in the last 30 days. This likely was always the plan but nice to see some pieces moving as it had been a long time between moves
