He could be right, just not what I've heard.
I don't think its necessarily they don't like the player, I think they do and would sign him, from what I heard its just the overall AAV that makes them question it.
But much like the Rantanen deal for Necas, I think Dallas feels they can trade Robertson for a younger/cheaper asset (2-4M AAV over 8 years) that will be able to fit in and play as well as Robertson.
The Necas and Rantanen swap worked well for both teams.

We should have retained 50% and traded him to Montreal for the 2nd before they gave it to LA for Danault. We'll never recover.

His list would have been made in Sept. long before Minnesota became an issue.

I think this is a ridiculous position. A max 7 year contract only takes him to 33-34. He's got 2 contracts left in his career, no doubt. Maybe you limit his trade protection but trading a 40 goal 100 point forward because you're worried about post apex is absolutely dumb as nails.
|
The problem with Robertson is that defensively he is not great. The points are nice but he struggles with keeping up in his own zone. Roope Hintz covers up a lot of his d-zone deficiencies. He also does not really check. He has 34 hits all season. 16 Take Aways and 75 Giveaways.
This is why team USA did not take him. You basically need a top end two way center to protect him.

Maybe there is a non-hockey reasoning to it? I seem to recall that there was some drama around Robertson's last contract negotiation and I thought the rumour was out there that someone high up in the Stars did not like or get along with Robertson.
I'm not saying this is true, but if there was anything to those rumours then maybe it is not about hockey. Because if it was just about the hockey then I agree with you that they are crazy to not want to keep him.
Also, if they are not keeping him then they should have gone harder after Andersson. The reason (in my opinion) that they didn't try to sign and trade for Andersson is because they needed the cap space for Robertson and they simply could not fit both.

The thing with Robertson is he's also not very noticable. He was potting goals in the regular season back when the Flames played them in the playoffs those 2 years and you never even noticed the guy in the playoffs. He's a weird player.

Not throwing hits is a poor metric for assessing one's defensive impact. Would recommend the following read for anyone curious about Robertson's three-zone impact with some insight from both Hintz and Duchene.
https://www.starsthoughts.com/p/jaso...a-and-defining
If the Flames were able to take advantage of traditional hockey bias against a big player who isn't very fast and doesn't throw hits and could pick up one of the top 10 scorers (oop just looked it up, he's 11th) over the last 5/6 seasons who is also only 26, I would be happy. If you're going spend assets, make sure it's on truly difference-making players.
Mckenna/Stenberg-xxxxxx-Robertson
Huberdeau-Frost-Gridin
Sharangovich-Backlund-Coronato
Honzek-Posposil-Klapka
Still have Reschny, Potter, Wyttenbach, additional firsts from this year/next, etc.
That giant gap at 1st line centre COULD be a good argument for forgoing any adding until after next year though, in which case I could be convinced that one more brutal season would be ideal.

Well, we'll see if the Necas Rantanen trade worked out well for Carolina after the dust settles. So far, they have Stankoven and magic beans.

Quick update: Panarin's agent has been given permission to chat with other teams about an extension. Sharks had talks with the agent and a 4 year deal was agreed to.
1 other team has also agreed to Panarin on an extension so he will have his choices. He still wants to go to Florida but they haven't agreed to anything yet.
Seattle had agreed to an extension and a trade with the Rangers but he used his NMC to veto the deal.
San Jose and 1 other team (Was told likely LA) have agreed to extensions but not trade pieces yet.

Yeah, I think your last point is key.
Flames have a really great prospect pool foundation, but they're still missing a clear #1LD, a superstar topline winger (if they don't draft McKenna/Stenberg) and an obvious top line centre.
I'm on the Reschny wagon for that, but I'd prefer him as a number 2 and Calgary draft that stud #1C next year. Don't need to do something like this until they're further along than Montreal and San Jose are this year.. I think patience and hoarding prospects is key to a good sustainable rebuild.

I'm an Oiler fan, not a Shark fan. Wouldn't mind the Sharks missing the playoffs to be honest.

I guess so. That team is the kind of team that would bounce the Oilers in rnd 1 if they met.

Not really. Oilers have beat the Sharks in 16 of the past 17 meetings. Sharks are up and coming but not there yet.

I guess you could still regurgitate Roko;s comment about "Ya'all need defencemen" even for the Oilers

Thanks for the info
I found it odd that he agreed to an extension with Seattle but then used his NMC. What was the point of the extension then?

I think that just means Seattle had agreed with the Rangers on what an extension and trade would look like. Panarin said no.
