Why such a focus on 2026?
2027 might be a deeper draft
And certainly has more centers.
And there is a valid strategy of putting the picks out further, to increase the chances of them being higher.

The 2028 Leafs 1st rounder looks delicious. It could well be a top 5 pick, with the BT overly complex set of conditions it could be a 2029. Imagine the Flames in the playoffs and getting to hold a top 5 pick. Oh baby please. I'd love to be on he laughing side of a BT deal.

Add to this spreading out decisions of who makes the roster. Having time to evaluate young players getting a crack when veterans are moved.

It does feel like the rebuild will take longer the further out the picks are. Flames pick they got for Lindholm is playing on the roster and they haven’t even made the pick they got for Hanifin. It is not the end of the world to have the picks further out but it does slow down the speed in which you will draft and develop some players for the veteran assets being traded today

Leafs are as far out of the playoffs as the Flames are

It's a trade-off, though. Having a couple first rounders a year for seven or eight years also means that the contention window will be opened for longer, as the team will have those later first rounders coming in on cheaper contracts that can offset some of the higher contracts (or has the luxury of trading a solid prospect for a top player).

If we're suffering through a proper rebuild, I'm hoping it leads to a very long contention window.

Leafs seem to be shopping players already. Bobby McMann trade talks started with the Oilers and Ducks among others.

Gotta think Mang would go back the other way.

Yup and anything that is intended to rush the rebuild works against that goal.
I'd be happy with more 2026 picks, but if you can increase the upside by getting 2027 or 2028 picks with less protection: I think you weigh it.

I would prefer to keep Coleman & Whitecloud. Trade Kadri & Weeger. Also, to better match the Flames window, ask for 2027 draft picks.

Why would Coleman want to stay if there’s no Weegar and no Kadri?

If Conroy doesn't get the offers he should stand pat - but that won't stop the inevitable CP meltdown if he does.

Interesting to hear the discussion on barnburner. Dreger seems to think it is very likely Kadri is dealt. Seems to think less on Coleman as it would really need to be a killer deal. Mentions he hears Conroy is listening on Weegar and mentions Ottawa, Detroit and Rhett brought up Boston as landing spots for him.

They could also be worse, and the guy making the trade can be left wondering why someone else is using the pick he traded for too.

I'm of the NFL mindset. If I have to wait for another year...the draft class and what positions look good is not that relevant because I might be trading for a 16 year old. Lots of risk both ways and time has nothing to make up for lost time. So if the good asset is two years out...give me more to make it worth my while.

If Utah is looking to make a splash, Calgary could be a one-stop shop for them with Kadri, Coleman, and either Weegar or Whitecloud potentially available.

They have some good pieces that could be appealing to the Flames too (especially you know who).

Given how strong the top of the Central is, this might be an odd year for them to go big game hunting, although getting the top wildcard spot and facing either Vegas or Edmonton in the first round could work out better than finishing 3rd in the Central. Plus, all of those Flames players have term left, so it wouldn't be selling the farm for one chance.

Dreger on Barn Burner thinks Detroit could circle back with CGY on Weegar if he's available, and then said they also want a 2C (Kadri) and have the pieces to make a big splash.
