Do we really have enough people going in either direction to warrant something like this? Kind of a surprise.

Yep gate 80 and 74 can take them. Won't be able to triple bridge but those two gates have little legs on the bridge to lift them to the second deck

It's a gateway flight that gets you easy access to the ME, Africa, India and Pakistan. Viewed from that lens, I can see a lot of users in Western Canada.

Moar aviation news:

Exclusive: Airbus to start larger A220 jet sales drive, sources say

https://www.reuters.com/business/aer...ay-2026-01-29/

Quote:
DUBLIN, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Airbus (AIR.PA), opens new tab is poised to start offering airlines and leasing firms a larger version of its A220 regional jet with a view to launching development later this year, industry sources said.

The campaign aims to line up enough pre-orders to justify going ahead with the roughly 180-seat A220-500 version and marks the start of proper negotiations before a potential launch announcement as early as the Farnborough Airshow in July.

Yes, yes, but when do we get those flying Aircraft Carriers like they had in Avengers?

80 cannot. It's 74 and 78.

76 I'm sure we could also do if the world was ending but it'd block 73. Stubby thing the A380... it's not that long, but the absurd 80 meter wingspan is the gating problem.

That said, an A380 has never been here. The A380 has diverted to YEG five different times; they have one capable gate (rightfully gate 80) with no upper deck bridge but in each case the A380 did not park at the terminal. Nobody up there has a towbar to push it out.

Damn that's what I meant, 78.

76 had the VSR closed when a a350-1000 was in there but not the end of the world

I recall some concern from airport people about YYC having only 2 gates capable when the terminal opened a decade ago. Turns out they made the right call.

Worldwide criticism for no water fountains, but the gates are working out.

Is there any chance that Etihad would run the first trip on this new route on the A380 to make a splash in marking the first direct flight?

I think those are connecting flights. A380 to Toronto or New York, then a Westjet from there to Calgary since they have an interline agreement

I loved flying on the C-series in Europe pre-Covid, haven't been on one since the name switch. Would totally book on a -500 if I had a choice on a route

Forget regionals, Delta (biggest and most profitable airline on the planet) has 70+ of the A220 flying. Trump is not going to ground 70 of their airplanes.

There was an impressive emergency landing on a road in Georgia today.

Witness video is at 2:20.
