Nope. I'd bet that he's going to croak and some other writer is going to be charged with finishing it and people are just going to complain about that too.

Yeah. He's the third son, so he's in line for the throne before Egg. He elects to stay a Maester and then we get Aegon the Unlikely. A fourth son of a fourth Son on the throne. Also Bloodraven appears at the end of the Mystery Knight, which is the third published novella. So that's another main series connection/character.

I wouldnt necessarily classify that as a 'Spoiler' but I'll take it. I'm not wise to all of the ways of the GoT Universe so I was just wondering because I'd heard it mentioned in passing and it seemed important to the Maester...I just didn't know why.

In his defense, wrapping up a story like this is much harder than just jotting down whatever cool ideas you come up with. The classic example was "Lost". Great for creating a bunch of interesting mysteries. They did not stick the landing with the ending though.

"Lost" is a great example. My understanding was that it was supposed to be a mini-series and then it got popular and to milk all the cash they could out of it they just made crap up as they went along.

Which, honestly, appears to be GRRM's MO as well and lo and behold, with no over-arching plan...it tends to end in a mess.

GRRM either has to pick someone who wins the crown, at least semi-permanently, or have a total destruction ending. But he won't do it...Whoever he picks as the winner will upset some people, but it couldn't be as bad as the show ending of everyone just getting along.

i have no doubt the GOT TV series was the general idea GRRM had prior to the reaction - i.e.

Spoiler!

Dany going rogue and being killed by Jon Snow; choosing Bran as king etc.

In reality, it's not a terrible general ending and it makes a ton of sense for certain characters

it seemed clear from the beginning that Dany wasn't going to be some benevolent queen

The execution was just rushed and poor.

The reaction may have scared him a bit. But also, there are so many loose ends to tie up in the books - far more than the show - and he's probably just sick of it all.

This show has done what many other franchises either refuse to do or cannot pull off. They executed in turning a large world epic/saga into a small, focused well-written mini series.

It probably helps that there was a source material; but focusing on a small character (i know future kings are there, but still) and a small event such as this tournament is wonderful.

I quit of House of the Dragon pretty quickly after it started as it just felt like another grandoise epic at a different time. I was kind of sick of that, to be honest. Especially in this world. It's nice to have a little sliver of life as the saga flows around it.

I was almost prepared to watch Dunc go through the rest of the series with no teeth. Haha.. they got me good
