It will be interesting to see how many vets they keep. I think you need to keep a reasonable amount of vets to teach and help develop the young players. If you trade all the good defencemen and you are unable to exit your own defensive zone, the young forwards do not learn how to create offence. And the young defenders do not learn to break out of their zone.
I would trade Weegar and keep Whitecloud. It is difficult to find a contender with Cap space that can trade for Kadri. Hoping that they can get talented young assets for Coleman

Updated average score: 6.57.
73% of responses are clustered between 6 and 8 meaning people are neutral-positive to somewhat satisfied in general with the rebuild so far.
Also shows that there is more consensus on CP than sometimes the day to day arguments would suggest. You've got less than 7% voting on the extremes (1, 2, 9 or 10).

I suppose “extremely unsatisfied” could include people that didn’t want a rebuild at all.

I went 8, but if there was 7.5 I would have gone with that.
We have had pending UFAs, and whether or not we tried to re-sign them we still moved them for assets. The jury is out for Kadri and Coleman, but we seem to replace older vets with younger guys, little by little. To me, that is a great strategy to build a team with cohesiveness.
I think Conroy has been nothing but great for this organization. I wish ownership was just a little more hands-off so Conroy could really take some more of the nails out of what used to be a team that would fight for a playoff spot. However, we are at a time that the Flames need to do a proper rebuild and not expedite it like Treliving did.

Eh. Whatever.
Basic okay moves, nothing bad but nothing great either, and the prospect + pick situation is not impressing anyone.
Premature question though.

Gonna be very difficult to become a contender again without a top three pick this year or next. If we get that, and four or five prospects in the system today graduate to the NHL, I think there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Conroy has done a good job overall. He is working within the constraints of an owner who ostensibly believes there's no such thing as a rebuild. Last year was a blip, we would've got curb stomped in the playoffs.
I trust the scouts to do a good job, we just need a lot to go our way from this point.

Yeah, I just genuinely dont see us getting that top 3 pick. We're just going to have to load the gun with as many bullets as possible and hope we hit something major.

ChatGPT ran 1,000,000 iterations of randomizing 1-10 and it came out with 8 as the top number, so that is what I voted.
Since tanking is all about lottery luck, figured it would be the best way to get the most solid number.
Seriously, apart from hitting on all ridiculous trades some of you think should happen, CC has done an admirably job with the mess left from the disgraced Wizard.

Disappointed that 6/7 is not a Poll Option...

I'm in the middle. I think that Conroy has done an above average job at drafting, and accumulating picks.
I think my issue is probably more to due with reading some of the proposals on this site that include the possibility of adding another teams highly regarded prospect ready to make the next step into the NHL, only to be let down. I like the idea of picks and prospects not just as many picks we can get towards the ladder end of the draft. I would like to see a hockey trades or something where we might not see picks but even if a sweetener is required on our behalf to get that prospect.
But what do I know!

I need an elite forward prospect to be drafted before I vote 6+. Two, with one being a centre, before I vote 8+.

Also in the middle, voted for a 5
Just waiting to see what are the Flames going to do with roster decisions at this trade deadline.
Will they trade a Coleman or Kadri?
Or will they make very little moves...

We have four trade chips that are worth a first, at least to one buyer in the market: Kadri, Coleman, Whitecloud and Weegar. I'll say three of them are still here post deadline.

2024: Extra 1st, extra 2nd, extra 3rd - that's REALLY good.
Parekh + Gridin = firsts
Basha + Battaglia = 2nds
Mews + Zarubin = 3rds
More good picks deeper in the draft. That's an out-of-the-park draft.
2025: Extra 1st, extra 7th
Reschny + Potter = Firsts
Wyttenbach in the 5th looks spectacular right now as if the Flames had another first.
That's a very good draft.
2026: Extra 1st
2027: extra 2nd that may turn into 1st
2028: extra 2nd if 2027 doesn't turn into 1st
For 3 straight years, the Flames have had an extra 1st round pick. That's huge. If they can find more top 60 picks in the next couple of drafts with Kadri, Coleman, Whitecloud - or even Weegar.. plus maybe a bit more depth picks from players like Hanley or Pachal - they should come out of this rebuild rather strong and deep. Plus, they are only now starting to bottom-out - great position to start adding top 5 prospects on a team with a more established defensive corps with Bahl, Kuznetsov, Brzustewicz and Parekh developing nicely (I am sure Parekh will), as well as solid support players like Zary, Pospisil, Klapka, and Coronato of course.
That's why I voted an 8. I would have voted a 10 had the prospects that Calgary received had been of a slightly better quality - more NHL upside. Grushnikov, Miromanov, and likely Wiebe as well (though I wouldn't cross him out at this point). The Hanifin trade was a bit light of course. Still, not every move can be perfect.
Flames will bottom-out now and draft an even higher calibre of pick soon. So by my estimation, this rebuild has been really good so far. Not perfect, but very good. That's why I voted an 8. I am honestly very excited as to what Conroy ends up doing this season, and next. These next two seasons should see the Flames really add to the future core.
I look forward to a poll again next season, or perhaps the season after. I bet the bell curve will shift downwards (to the more positive).

While the team seems to accept the necessity of change, I remain unconvinced they have fully committed to a rebuild. Most of the recent trades appear to have been forced, driven by players either refusing to re-sign or demanding excessive contracts. Had a superstar Unrestricted Free Agent like Marner agreed to sign with team, I believe the organization would have signed them and opted for a quick retooling instead.

Well, we can’t choose based on who we will pick in the draft…so people deferring to that position are not living in reality. We can only base a judgment on “so far”.

IMO this is a tough time to grade the rebuild, as they are still in the descent phase. And that is the easy part,
IMO Conroy has gotten fair value in general for his trades and the return has focused on the future.
He hasn't signed any bad UFA contracts but not going to give too much credit for this since it is basic. Some of the extensions seem a bit premature.
Really want to see how they deal with the veterans with remaining term. IMO dealing Kadri this season is a no-brainer and I want to see them be aggressive on this.
Grading draft picks is tough. They look promising buy most of that story has yet to be told.
I don't particularly like how so much of the playing time has gone to the oldest players and would like to see that change. As well as giving call-ups a little more rope.
I am definitely more satisfied that not, guess I will grade it a 6 for this point in time.

Considering they should have started the rebuild years ago, hard to be satisfied.

I think you’ll find that most players are traded because they’re on expiring contracts teams can’t/wont sign, request trades, or are cap issues and thus receive lesser value. Those who don’t fall under those criteria are either not working out, or are a necessary part of a return the other team covets.
If the bar for “forced” is so low that it’s essentially just having a timely reason to trade the player, every trade is going to look forced.
