At risk of sounding tin foil hat-ish, it seems to me all this is happening because the Southern Question was never fully answered after the US civil war, which in turn created the Lost Cause Narrative. Everything happening right now aligns almost exactly with that idealism.
The Civil War ended slavery but not white supremacist ideology. What survived became the Lost Cause myth that still shapes American politics; it isn't outright racism but more directed at dismantling what is supposed to be a democracy in favour of white Christianity, gun worship and other core tenets like state autonomy.
This now-nationalized idealism (and modern day supporters of the Lost Cause) may have lost their rights to slaves, but they sure do want to keep their "way of life" which includes patriarchy, guns, racism and bigotry. "Illegal aliens" aren't the problem with people viewing life through this lens. Left wing individuals (regardless of colour) are.
Personally I'm patiently waiting for Trump to put the Robert E Lee statue back up.

And now comes the most nauseating part of this whole goddamn mess: the hypocrisy. The same loud-mouthed idiots who spent years screaming about tyranny are suddenly dead ####ing silent, or worse, cheering, now that it’s their side doing it. “ThEy’Re cOmInG fOr OuR gUnS!” “GoVerNMenT oVerReAch!” “ShAll nOt bE inFrinGeD!” All that chest-thumping bull#### evaporated the second armed federal agents started terrorizing people they don’t like.
Let me get this straight: a civilian gets shot dead by federal agents, and the only thing you brainless ####s can muster is “well, DHS says he had a gun”? THAT’S your red line? Guns are sacred when they’re strapped to your waist, but magically become a death sentence when they’re used as a post-hoc excuse by the government? Either the Second Amendment applies to everyone, or you never believed in it at all. ####ing pick one and own it.
This is exactly what tyranny looks like, by the way. Not jackboots marching in formation, but armed agents roaming neighborhoods, stopping people, killing civilians, and then daring the public to question it. Tyranny is execution followed by a press release. Tyranny is labeling the dead a “threat” so the state doesn’t have to explain why someone’s life just ended in the street. Tyranny is demanding obedience while shredding due process and calling it order.
And all you so-called “freedom lovers” are ####ing fine with it, as long as it’s brown people, immigrants, protesters, or anyone you’ve already dehumanized. Turns out “don’t tread on me” actually meant “tread on them.” You weren’t afraid of tyranny. You were afraid of losing dominance. There’s a difference, and this moment exposes it completely.
“Just comply” isn’t a principle. It’s cowardice dressed up as common sense. It’s the language of people who have already accepted that the state gets to decide who deserves rights and who doesn’t. And once you make that deal, don’t act shocked when the line moves, because it always ####ing does.
This is why the “domestic terrorist” label gets thrown around like confetti. Not because it’s accurate, but because it’s convenient. It’s how illegitimate power shuts down thought. Slap the label on, kill the person, move on. If fear, panic, or refusal is enough to earn that word now, then it’s meaningless, and every decent American who won’t kneel quietly is already guilty by future association.
You don’t get to pretend you love the Constitution while applauding as it is actively being ####ing pissed on. You don’t get to scream about freedom while defending a government that kills people first and explains later. And you sure as #### don’t get to lecture anyone about law and order when what you’re actually defending is unchecked violence backed by a badge.
If this doesn’t make you angry, you never cared about tyranny. You cared about who it was being used against. And that makes you a fraud; loud, ignorant, and complicit. #### every one of you. Forever.

This is happening because Biden's Attorney General Merrick Garland did nothing to follow up on charges for January 6th, the perfect phone calls, election fraud and a whole bunch of other things to avoid the look of it being "politically motivated". There is no way Drumph should have been able to run, as a convicted felon he can't even carry a gun or get a job in Florida FFS

good on Victor Wembanyama for speaking out. Wish others would too.
Quote:
Wembanyama issued a strong statement on what's been going on in Minnesota, saying he's "horrified" every day he wakes up and sees the news on television.
"You know, PR has tried, but I'm not going to sit here and give some politically correct [answer]. Every day, I wake up and see the news and I'm horrified. I think that it's crazy that some people make it sound like it's acceptable, like the murder of civilians is acceptable.
"I read the news and sometimes I'm asking very deep questions about my own life. I'm conscious also that saying everything that's on my mind would have a cost that's too great for me right now. So, I would rather not get into too many details."
Wembanyama was then asked about the fear of speaking openly in the face of injustice. Wembanyama added, "It's terrible. I know I'm a foreigner. I live in this country. I am concerned."
When asked whether his status as a foreigner played a role in his hesitancy to speak more on the issue, Wembanyama admitted that was the case.

Lets also be honest...don't run a women for president in America
Merrick Garland is indeed a huge piece of #### and a useless, shameful example of the average American perspective of "not my problem" that pervades their society.
And yes, a woman can win an election in the USA. Kamala was a weak candidate though. She was a lame duck VP with basically no achievements. It was rank stupidity, the same type which loaded us with Merrick Garland, that thrust her into the nomination.
Hillary was also a strange, demonstrably laden with scandal choice. That was an example of enduring ego.
I could see a minnesotan becoming president after this though. Klobuchar should have some juice after this.

Sure, I don't disagree at all. But I'm looking at it more from the standpoint of "why were the Jan 6ers there in the first place". Or "why are certain people in the USA doing the thigs they do". Or "why are people blindly supporting Trump".
All those insurrectionists had a lot in common, and a lot of MAGA Americans have the same things in common. Most of which can be traced to the Lost Cause Narrative of post civil war USA.
The Union had the opportunity to absolutely crush the Confederates and everything they stood for, which (IMO) would have been abhorrent at the time, but would have likely changed the trajectory of current American thinking.
Anyways. I read way too much civil war stuff. But it's a theory I can't stop playing around with in my head.

The fundamentals are certainly there. Casual racism in southern states, the decline in status for poor whites, globalism eating up jobs for those without high school degrees.
But it was really when smartphones started carrying social media in 2013 that everything got supercharged. It was one thing to have your crazy unemployed Uncle banging away on Facebook at all hours. You maybe saw it if you checked your feed when you got home.
On the phone? Freaking EVERYBODY checks it when they sit down for anything longer than a 30 second wait. Suddenly you're being filtered into groups and "likes" and echo chambers.
If you don't like reality, guess what? You don't need to believe it. And here are 50 people to support you in that opinion. It's the "experts" that are wrong!
If we someday manage as a society to recognize how harmful social media is... maybe we pull out of the dummy spiral.
