Yes. Drink this. So very, very good. Best tasting rye i've found to mix with it is Canadian Club.
This is a drink that won't leave you with a sticky feeling in your mouth like rye and coke or rum and coke. If you don't like rye and ginger, try having a spiced rum (captain morgan) and coke. Those are good too.

Well you ARE 18, so I guess there's no point in hiding it by ordering something other than vodka slimes. Come to think of it I only had a few of those back when I was 18. I've always been a Rye and Ginger man for the most part. I'd also avoid the Gin and Tonic right away. Gin tastes like pine needles smell and tonic water is.. well.. I don't like it much. Gin is definitely an acquired taste.

But I really like drinks with amaretto when I want something flavourful and not so heavy on the alcohol (like Rye is). Amaretto and Coke tastes like Dr. Pepper or Cherry Coke.

You should go for Jack & Cokes instead. You should also try a Cuba Libre, which is basically a rum and coke with the only difference being the addition of lime, and of course depending where you order this some places with make it with 20 year old Cuban Rum or older, making the drink a bit more expensive.

Go for a vodka red bull. Lots of kids these days are into the energy drinks, and I can't think of a better way to get you hammered WHILE rotting your teeth out than one of those concoctions.

There's your problem. You haven't tried anything that is mainstream yet. kokanee gold, Guiness, double rum and coke. As you said, order singles or order a mainstream beer like Canadian, or Bud.

I would recommend a Jagger Bomb instead...a shot of Jaggermiester dropped inside a small glass of Red Bull. They taste great but don't over do it. It's a good shot to start the night with...remember that too much Red Bull is bad for you.

I've always been a rye and coke kinda guy. Certain brands are smoother than others. I like Crown Royal. Try a crown and coke or a crown and ginger.

I don't like rum, but I do like spiced rum. Same rules apply for spiced rum as rye (except for the brand name... does anybody other than Captain Morgan make spiced rum?).

Long Island Iced Tea is pretty good too. I'll order one whenever I'm at a restaurant and feeling like alcohol. Word of advice for Long Islands though. Don't go hiking on a hot summer day (get dehydrated) and then go to a restaurant upon return of your hike and drink two long islands within 15 minutes. You'll get drunk quickly.

This goes against the above stereotype however, I didn't A) drink until I was of age (19 here) and B) I didn't like beer when I first started drinking. Oh my how times have changed (for the better).

I started out drinking with girlie drinks, a Singapore Sling was my drink of choice those first few months. While they can be thick and sugary they tasted like fruit punch and went down fairly well. I found beer just too bitter.

Now I like and breath Coca-Cola. A staple of mine in my high school and undergrad days. In fact one of the happiest days of my life was when the univeristy changed their contract from Pepsi to Coke. I danced in the hallways, I really did. So it was very dissapointing to me to NOT like Rum and Coke when I first tried it. I tried the beforementioned beer (Keith's), Rum and Coke, Singapore Sling, and I had a gladiator shot on my 19th b-day.

Now I'm a big fan of beer, live for Keith's. Rum and coke is one of my favourites a classic.

If you want to learn how to drink beer, bring gum to the bar with you, it helps the beer go down smoother. Start with something lighter like Coors Light, then move to Blue, and of course end up at Keith's (pronounced 'Keetz' for the record).

In terms of rum, when warm rum is mixed with ice cold Pepsi or Coke it goes down much smoother. You can't taste the rum, but it doesn't taste like cola, it's a different taste, not really bitter. However if you have mildly cold fountain cola mixed with rum it just isn't as good.

There's a local dairy here in Cape Breton called Scotsburn that makes juice. Their Fruit Punch is by far the sugariest juice I've ever had. You can mix it 50/50 juice/vodka without tasting the vodka. The bitterness of the vodka dilutes the sugary taste to make it taste like normal fruitpunch (I've had some messy nights because of that). So sugar and sweet mixed with alcohol also will help you become more accustomed to alcohol.

Now, just to be clear, this is only *IF* you really want to. You don't have to become an alcoholic, you don't have to go to the bar to have fun. I used to be a REALLY shy individual, and found that alcohol helped take away my anxiety when meeting people, and being in a crowd of people I don't know. Now I don't get paniced when I'm surrounded by people I don't know, in fact I handle myself very well and am the outgoing person I always wanted to be.

The theory above applies to anything. If you want to lean yourself off of sugar in coffee, order a larger size with the same amount of sugar. Drink that for a bit, then when you lean yourself back on the smaller size reduce the amount of sugar. That's exactly how I went from taking my Tim's meduim with 1 sugar to going black altogether.

I don't reccomend mixing energy drinks with alcohol, I'm not chemist or biologist but I'm sure there's that warning for a reason. And frankly I like my heart, you know, not randomly stopping, but that's just me :P

Another angle to consider is "well or top shelf"? Take gin, for example. There's some gut rotting, bathtub horse piss that will have your diaphragm yodeling before it even hits the back of your throat. And if looking as manly as possible IS an issue when you're ordering a drink, then I submit that Confidence is manly and, in drink ordering, confidence is borne of experience. Practice like you play, man. If you can, practice in a bar on a real live bartender. If not, practice at home.

But you're going to look a lot more amateurish if you're fumbling with your wallet, bumping into some Sheila and spilling her Chardonnay all over her silk blouse as you try to wedge yourself between barstools so that the barkeep can hear your oder, and sputtering out the words than if you slide between two ladies, give the bartender either the wink or the nod (don't, for the love of God, waive your $20 at him), lean in slightly by bending at the waist (a real man never goes up on his tiptoes to order a drink), and calmly, smoothly, and confidently say "Tangueray 10. Tonic. Just a little ice."

Now if your Rico Suave game is on, perhaps the aforementioned ladies have noticed the well kempt, pleasant-smelling, polite, well-spoken young man ordering a big boy drink next to them. And if that's the case then perhaps one of them gives you a little smile. And if all that happens and you DON'T say something along the lines of "I'm sorry, I didn't even ask...do you two need another round?"....then you're, well you're like I was when I was your age.

also...on gin and tonics: it is considered uncouth to order a G&T after Labor Day down here in the states. Not sure if that applies up there or not, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

One doesn't want to fun afoul of the customs of the land due to something as avoidable as ignorance.
