Colorado just seems like a less likely destination give they paid heavily for a second line center last year, resigned him and is playing well.

Necas has been playing right wing for the vast majoriy of his time with the Avs, lining up alongside Nathan MacKinnon. Brock Nelson plays center on the 2nd line but he's aging as well and is a UFA. Think they'd love to have Kadri back, he's obviously a match there, would give them some fantatic depth heading into the playoffs and proven he can step up in big games.

Nelson's not a UFA until 27-28.

They resigned Nelson last summer and he currently has 42 points in 49 games. Could be wrong but it doesn't seem like 2c will be a priority for Colorado given the trade they made last year and how well it's worked out for them.

Minnesota seems like a contender that actually needs a 2c.

Nelson is signed for 2 more years after this one. He has 42 points and aging better than Kadri right now. Kadri's continuing cap hit as he ages is likely a luxury they prefer not to have.

A team is better suited trading for Kadri and putting him in a lower slot. He'll still be a good 2C, but he would be an elite 3C. If Colorado had C depth of Mackinnon, Nelson, Kadri they are even more of a dominant favorite to win the Cup.

Unless I'm wrong, it looks like the Avs could manage Kadri's cap hit for the next 3 years.

we can take on a contract now and then help them even further by signing Makar...because CC is a good guy

The AVS have a deadline cap space of $5M, so $2M+ would have to be retained or go the other way.

If they add Kadri without retention, they would have $5.5M to sign their bottom 3 forwards and bottom 3 D-men. The league min salary would be $1M, so they would be a little short, and have a pretty lackluster 3rd pairing/4th line.

So it's doable, but it would be a bit of a squeeze. They might end up losing guys like Olofsson, Drury and Malinski, but that's not the end of the world.

I think this year deadline cap space becomes far less relevant as they also have to ice a full season cap compliant roster for each playoff game

Hellllllooooo Mackenzie.

If Whitecloud has made Weegar available, that’s a W.

I find this talking point funny. “We don’t want 8 years in the abyss, we’re already at 4, and have been tending down, but no - we must maintain, as we do not want 8!”

It also shows how little Lebrun knows about the NHL. The Flames have to keep some guys around just to make the cap floor. They cannot trade Kadri, Weegar, Farabee, Coleman, Yegor because they would not make the cap floor then. And also every team keeps some guys around, that is just how that works.

In all fairness, he did say "not interested in going into an eight year abyss."

I'd reason that this year is the first year that has actually been a real abyss for the Flames. It's the first time the Flames organization has seemed to embraced where and what they are.

Last year they fought for the playoffs until the bitter end (and made some good trades). In the two prior years, they were just a team that was unintentionally terrible.

I sure don't want this team to suck for seven more years following this season.

It's pretty much impossible to trade just everyone. Imagine what it would do to the market.

And yeah, while I generally dismiss cap floor arguments, if you traded all those guys, you'd have to sign a bunch of vets at astronomical prices for who they are.

Unfortunately, keeping veterans is a good away of getting an 8 year abyss.

Colorado would be about $150k over with Kadri in the lineup for a playoff game.
Olofsson(1.75) - MacKinnon(12.6) - Necas(6.5)
Lekhonen(4.5) - Nelson(7.5) - Nichushkin(6.125)
Landeskog(7) - Kadri(7) - Colton(4)
Kelly(0.825) - Drury(1.725) - Kiviranta(1.25)

Total: $60.775M

Towes(7.25) - Makar(9)
Manson(4.5) - Burns(1)
Girard(5) - Malinski(1.4)

Total: $28.15M

Blackwood(5.25)
Wedegwood(1.5)

Total: $6.75M

Team total: $95.675M; Cap limit: $95.5M

Assuming O'Connor's $2.5M, either stays on LTIR, or goes the other way in a trade. Colorado could always just dress Posch(0.8725) as the backup. Play Achan(0.775) instead of Malinski/Burns/Girard on D; or even play one of Brindley(0.95) and Bardakov(0.8675) ahead of Kriviranta. Not to mention that Landeskog's injury remains uncertain.
