Fire McDermott, interview Daboll and Rivers. That's my kind of humour

I was listening to NFL radio this morning. Hiring Rivers would be boom/bust. There could be no inbetween. He would need a strong assistant HC that knows how to handle the mundane daily duties of HC's that most non-coaches don't even realize they have to do. Also would need top shelf OC and DC. Put that around him and then it's a matter of how effective his rah rah speeches are to charge up the troops. It's not the way I would go with a roster like the Bills that is close but I think there's a scenario where it may work.

I might be oldschool, but even entertaining the idea of an HC who has never held any NFL or college coaching position completely rubs me the wrong way. Even the up-and-coming guys in their mid 30s have been grinding and working their way up for a long time. Plus, we live in a world in which Brian Flores will never get another HC gig, and we all know why. A guy with zero coaching experience waltzing into an HC interview sits wrong with me.

I have to believe that the interview with Rivers is either:
1. A back door interview for an OC role or even a QB coach. Interview him early so they can see if he could be a fit on the staff for the next Head Coach.
2. Doing Rivers a solid by publicly announcing the interview to open up interviews on other teams. They can also use the interview to see if he has any feedback on Allen’s and the rest of the offense’s performance this year.
You can’t possibly hand the reins of a Super Bowl contender to a guy with just some high school coaching experience. At the same time, after Pegula’s press conference, god knows what the organization is up to.

Guy on reddit who has called a lot of the hirings so far has said the Bills are pretty much set on Klint Kubiak and are going through the motions until the can "interview" (hire) him.

Kubiak is an interesting choice, the Bills run game is very good after all. I don't think the guy is ready but that doesn't matter when there are this many vacancies.

JJ Redick would beg to differ, sir.

well, if Kubiak is their guy, they better hope for a Seahawks loss on Sunday. If they win, they can't interview him until after the Super Bowl (the interview window for Super Bowl teams next week is just for those who did a virtual interview in the first window, and because Buffalo was still in the playoffs they missed the first window entirely).
Also, might as well scrap the Rooney Rule at this point. Browns have apparently not had a single in-person interview with a minority candidate yet (McDaniel cancelled), but they've already had two interviews with Monken and Schwartz. Scheelhaase will probably interview for them in-person next week, but they'll need one more. Curious to see who gets the token interview.

truly a wonderful day for the rest of the division. Ravens got a gem in Jesse Minter, Browns at least have interviewed Grant Udinski. Whole league gets younger on the sidelines, so the Steelers, who have a history of hiring guys in their 30s, play 4D chess and hire a has-been in his 60s. Easily the laziest and most unimaginative hiring possible, and another example of the Rooney Rule being a farce. Brian Flores signing an extension in Minnesota makes sense now, given it came on the same day as McCarthy being interviewed. Still had to give a token interview to Weaver yesterday. Also couldn't wait another couple of days to at least interview Shula and Scheelhaase, because clearly, McCarthy was so highly sought after they just HAD TO move quickly lol.
This blows, man.

yeah, we obviously didn't know Mike Tomlin and Mike McCarthy were the only two choices. Stupid on our part, I guess.

I recall when the current* Steelers QB said McCarthy had possibly the lowest football IQ of any coach he had.

Crazy but that’s what happens when fans get spoiled.
