Default Kanye vs. 50

Probably won't be a very popular topic to most of the people on this board, but I know there are a few hip hop fans here like myself, although we are in the minority.

Any ways, both guys, after changes to the release dates of their new albums are going to be releasing them on the same day, September 11. 106 & Park mentioned a "debate" between the two stars about who's album is better. I actually like 50's tunes because of the Dre influence, but I don't think he holds a candle to Kanye in terms of creativity and/or lyrics.

Thoughts?

I think Kanye has already had a few good songs off his new album, like Stronger.

50 has that annoying "Ayo Technology" or whatever the hell it's called. That song just really bugs me for some reason.

I don't like either of them. Kanye is probably the better "musical artist" and lyricist. We still wouldn't have heard of 50 if it wasn't for Eminem and Dr. Dre. They are both ego-maniacal, stereotypical angry black males that I frankly don't have any time for. They are both jokes to me for different reasons.

Although he was also a typical angry black male, I long for the days of 2pac, Wu-Tang Clan and Big L. That was hip-hop. Today's "pop-hop" is laughable 95%+ of the time compared to the early to mid-90's.

Yeah definitely agree with you about the good old days... and I would have actually mentioned those three artists you listed as well LOL.

But I don't have the same disdain for new hip hop that you seem to have. It's odd because Kanye and 50 have quite different sounds, but I do like both guys.

I am not a hip-hop fan by any means, but Kanye seems to have the more unique sound and lyrics.

This will come off sounding stupid to many, but I think Kanye is the most overrated MC out there right now. Don't get me wrong, he guy is a beast behind the boards but I think he's way overhyped when it comes to the MC part of it. He gets all this praise because he's 'different' than most mainstream rap/hip-hop (which is garbage right now to be honest), but I don't think him being different means that his music is any good. The guy is a decent MC, but does not deserve the savior title that he gets from many.

As for 50's music.... meh. The guy was a mixtape beast back in the day and that really helped his career. A year before Get Rich or Die Trying came out the guy was flooding the market with mixtapes and building up hype.... since In Da Club blew up it seems that he's lost that passion and is content with putting out something that'll make a buck (see Candy Shop, Ayo Technology... etc). Ironically, the guy is actually a pretty smart individual if you hear him in interviews (and get past the ridiculous 9 gunshot persona).

We'll see what each respective MC offers up in their album. I expect a lacklustre album from Fiddy. Maybe Kanye finally lives up to the hype this time around... For the sake of hip-hop I hope he does because this year has been godawful in terms of quality mainstream releases.

Agreed. The ONLY, and I mean ONLY reason 50 Cent is even a house hold name is because a man named Dr. Dre. Without Dre's beats it would be 50 Cent who?

However Kanye makes his own beats, writes his own lyrics and is very very original. Only thing I don't like about Kanye is he is a little full of himself and his music.

I am actually going to see Kanye and Luacris in concert in October.

OT - What the HELL is going on with Detox? This album was mentioned in 2000... then pushed to 2004, then September 2007 and now 2008? Any one have any news on this? Definitely one of my most anticipated albums ever.

Yeah, I think everybody is waiting on that album.

Dre operates in weird, weird ways. He's had a 6 year delay between albums once already.

I'd guess he's super busy producing or what not (although he hasn't done much on the rumored 50 album.. so I'm not quite sure what he's up to). Long story short, I wouldn't buy any release date until that album is on shelves.

All I know is that DETOX will probably be one of the best albums of all time after this huge wait.

Well, Dre is probably one of the most respected producers/artists out there in hip hop because of the quality of his work. I've heard he's a crazy perfectionist which is probably why his stuff is so good. Apparently, he wasn't completely satisfied with a lot of the beats he had dubbed for Detox and sold them off to 50 and The Game instead.

Hopefully it comes out soon though, 'cause this is getting pretty ridiculous LOL.

I don't really have anything to add, since I don't think much of the whole rap genre, but you can buy 50 cents Lamborghini on ebay right now.

Oh you will never be able to replace NWA, Easy-E, 2Pac, Biggie, Ice Cube(old school), and many others. Unfortunetly we are stuck debating over Kanye - 50 Cent instead of 2Pac - Biggie. I miss thoes days!

Wow, one of the only threads on music I actually understand.

I'm thinking 50's album will be better just cause of Dre \ Em being behind it. I'll buy 50's album (to support my favorite label - Aftermath), but I'm going to wait see how Kanye's is before I ...... download it

Apparently Busta Rhymes was saying Dre has a huge collection of his best beats hes saving for Detox. At the start of this year, that ablum was suppose to be September 2007. Now its 2008 I think.

I hope that guys goes on tour one last time. I have to see him & Em live. I'm pretty mad at myself I didn't go to the Up In Smoke tour that came to Vancouver a few years back.

I think that Kanye is great. His albums are always good to listen to and they are just very different from 50.

I do get a little tired of some of the "skits" or interludes or whatever on Kanyes albums, but the music is generally good. I think that 50 is a one-trick pony. We get it...you were a hard core gangster and now you have arrived and have sex with girls...yawn.

Yup. I'd say that he is the most respected producer out there right now. You can make an argument for Timbo, but his success has stemmed more from the pop side of things (see JT, Nelly Furtado etc..). It's always a big deal for an artist when he gets a Dre beat.

Back to the topic at hand... 50 and Kanye release their albums on the same day... I wonder who wins the chart battle. 50 has generally been a star when it comes to this, but it seems that his star is fading a bit. The two singles he's got right now (Ayo Technology and I Get Money) aren't really burning up the airwaves eitehr. I think Kanye takes it.

K-West kills 50. It's not even close and I disagree strongly with those who think Kanye can't rap.
I love Kanye's stuff and can't wait for his new one. The only issue I have with Kanye, as mentioned by others is his ego.

As far as "the old days" go, that will never change about rap. People always want to compare to the old stuff. One day people will talk about how "joe newguy" isn't as good as Lil Wayne was.

I don't know why the comparisons are always needed. Yes 2pac and Biggie were great, but does every new act need to be compared to them? We don't compare every new rock band out there to Nirvana? why do it with rap?

You know I find it almost hard to believe that someone can like Kanye and 50 cent at the same time.

50's got some good beats if you want to go get drunk and dance with some half naked women at an overcrowded club.

Kanye... well he actually makes music. You can listen to it anywhere. Some of it is kinda poppy, sure, but it's still good music. He's far from my favourite MC but as far as mainstream hiphop goes he really is the best thing out there. "Hey Momma" is one of my favourite tracks of the past couple years, while anytime a 50 cent song comes on I cringe and turn the station.

I get it that some people listen to him for the production, and yeah, it's pretty good. But I've never been the kind of person to listen to a song cause part of it is good.
