They did draft one of the better hockey names in Shamil Shmakov in the 7th round.

They have had some busts, but also some decent ones like Duchene, ROR, Jost, Byram and Newhook who have been moved. But yeah, since Makar in 2017, they haven't drafted anyone who is actually on their team now.

Their strategy over the last few years has been to stay relevant via trade.

When you walk away with Landeskog, MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Makar over a 7 year period, you can afford to screw up the rest. Adding to that getting Toews from the Isles for cheap, grabbing Nuke after he looked like his career was flatlining in Dallas, and other players fitting in seemlessly - the Nelson trade gets a lot of hate, but the guy has 24 goals - then it looks easy.
