It is relevant because it impacts potential destinations for players.
If you want to ignore that as part of the conversations, feel free, but it is naive to believe that things don't have an impact on hockey.

Can we just make a blanket agreement to TRY not to speculate on the thought processes of the players, especially when it relates to their family? I realize that i engaged in this today already by making a glib comment about living in vegas over SJ, but I think our most distasteful historical comments on this board are those based in this exact line of thought. How can we possibly know what Kadri thinks of ICE? How can we possibly know what Meredith thought of living in Calgary? Why do we think we should talk about those things?

If whitecloud ends up going for a 1st? Thats 2 1sts a 2nd and a B/C prospect for Ras? Even if he extends thats great value for the flames. If it becomes 3 1sts??? Unreal

Believe me, Canadians can be racist, too. Incredibly so. My wife deals with it every single day. This is not a Canada vs. U.S. thing.
I would be extremely shocked, however, if Kadri got any death threats from ICE agents. Are you suggesting this is the case?

My eyes are wide open, and not to the crap that appears on TV. If you're a foreigner legally in the U.S., you should be carrying your papers at all times – which is only common sense for a foreigner travelling in ANY country. If you do that, you're as safe from the authorities as you can reasonably expect anywhere.

I'm a person of color and I've faced racism in Canada, that will happen everywhere.
I've traveled to many places in the USA and have family that live in a few states. I can say racism in the USA is at a whole different level than in Canada.

Given the number of times that Kadri has criticized Trump we can probably use some deductive reasoning to determine his current thoughts. I doubt he is pumped at the prospect of being a target in the States
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...-trump/?sn-amp
Quote:
Trump’s proposed ban could potentially limit practicing Muslim athletes from traveling to the United States if he were to be elected. The billionaire business magnate continues to lead Republican primary polls.
“It’s unfortunate that this is what it’s come to,” Kadri said. “But I mean, that being said, I’m lucky to live in a country like Canada, where people of political stature don’t say those kinds of things to make people feel out of place.”
|
https://churchandcarlton.net/2017/02...out-of-hockey/
The second article has his comments from 2017 where he criticized Trump again. But he has been critical of Trump multiple times in his career and almost anybody who knows him says he wants to live in Canada. And it seems pretty obvious as to why.

Well, if the player was traded he wouldn't be a Flame, would he? What if that player was just traded to Edmonton, would you drive him then?

I see Whitecloud as more of a bottom pair Dman who would return something similar to Zadorov and get a 3rd and 5th. If he is flipped immediately he could land a 2nd because he has a favorable contract.
A 1st seems extreme. Would love it but I am still trying to find out if I am really underrating Whitecloud or if he is being overrated by some?

I don't think that Whitecloud is as objectively good nor has the reputation of Tanev, and we were unable to get more than a 2nd and d prospect for him. Maybe you argue that the additional contract year provides more value but it's not a super bargain contract or anything.

2.75 million for 2 more years is a bargain for sure .
I thought the value would be a 2nd OR 3rd + 4/5
If they already have a 2nd on the table that’s very impressive/exciting

I'd sooner keep Whitecloud (been a fan for a while) and move someone like Bean instead. Of course, if rumors are to be believed, maybe they're listening to offers on everyone?

I am in no rush to trade Whitecloud. It is ok for the Flames to collect good assets (and by all accounts, good people). His presence in the line up isn't the difference between tanking and mushy middle. He does not replace Ras, nor does he block the youngsters.

Well, in addition to Kadri's own comments about politics, we know Carolina is on his no trade list. Carolina is a perennial contender (made it to round 3 last season), has a low state income tax, it's in a nice climate, in a decent enough city, and has good space for a centre like him.
There's not really any reason aside from politics I can see why he wouldn't want to go there.

It’s more a case of is his value with 2 cheap years on his contract the highest right now
He will be 31 and need a new contract in 2 years when (best case) the Flames are starting to enter their upswing (IMO)
That’s why it makes sense to move him earlier than later .

I think his contract and play is probably closer to that of Carlo than that of Zadorov. The contract, usage, RH shot, and play style are very similar.
I also think Zadorov is probably the one deal where Conroy just sold ASAP to get the guy out of the locker room.
He could have fetched more than a 3rd if they waited until the deadline for sure, but also not directly as comparable as a rental vs Whitecloud who has term on a very attractive deal.

One such incident has been reported. One. That's wrong… and it is also not a reason to brand the entire organization as ‘Gestapo’, which is what the governor of Minnesota and others are doing.
