I don't think he will be blocking anyone, at least this year. You still need 4 D-men for the PK, and that's where Whitecloud is going to get a lot of his minutes.
You're also going to use Whitecloud, so you can insulate Parekh, and Brzustewicz from facing the opposition's top forwards.
Like Conroy said, he won't be taking any of Parekh's PP time away, and most D-men start their career on the 3rd pairing, it takes at least a season or 2 before the game slows down for them. It usually takes 4–5 seasons before they take the next step defensively.
Would you really be disappointed if Parekh plays 12–15 mins a night at even strength, and 4–5 mins on the PP? I think it's better than watching him face off against the McDavids and MacKinnons of the NHL, being hemmed in his own zone, and chewing on minuses.

Couldn't remember exactly but it always bothered me because Stralman ended up being a player and we traded him for sfa. Always felt like he never had a chance.

It was definitely a mind boggling trade by Sutter. Almost as bad as trading away Lydman after the lock out year.

I really don’t think the Flames will bottom out enough for a top 5 pick let alone a top 3.
Whitecloud may be a defensive upgrade on Andersson and should fit Huska’s system perfectly. I think Flames will win enough low scoring games to get them into the 10-15 overall range as usual.
Flames can never tank as well as other teams. Don’t bet against historic behaviour.

I was excited when they acquired him as he seemed to have a lot of potential. I always figured he just wasn't a Sutter type unfortunately, just as they dealt Lydman away for next to nothing. It's one of the gaffes that doesn't get much attention, but he went on to play nearly 1000 games in the NHL. And it didn't take long for him to establish himself (as you well know). That next season he had 34 points in 73 games with CBJ.
Lost for nothing. Yuck.

It was a weird situation - the Flames traded a second (that turned into Brandon Saad) and Wayne Primeau for Stralman and a 7th. Before the season started, they traded him to Columbus for the pick that turned into Max Reinhart, and he promptly put up 34 points in his first season there.
Its possible he didn't want to be in Calgary and they did him a favour and moved him.
Anton definately wanted to be in Calgary, and did not ask to be traded to the Blue Jackets.

It's more so about maximizing the asset (Whitecloud) when I don't think he's a big organizational need currently.
Whitecloud is an attractive asset right now because he has term, no trade protection, cheap and can be eat 4/5 minutes on a contender.
Yeah you can make the minutes work, but that was kind of my point. What's the point of having him play 4/5 minutes everynight.
We have older D that can play up and down Weegar, Bahl, Hanley and Parekh. We have tweeners if we need like Miro and Cicek. We have kids that are pushing in Brz, Kuz and Parekh.
It just feels like a waste. His most attractive feature is the term on his contract, flip him at high value. I'm not saying right this second, but by the deadline forsure.

Love this site for this kind of stuff. You got hooked on the team all the way over in Sweden because of Loob, cemented into a lifer by Iggy and then your brother almost got to play for the organization (and I think got married in Calgary)!?
What a cool story and a fantastic connection to the Flames.
This team owes you a couple more cups! Let's hope this upcoming version of the team does exactly that.

Stralman had an undiagnosed lung issue while he was with the Leafs, Flames, and Blue Jackets.
Not until he got to the Rangers was it properly diagnosed and treated.
It held him back from becoming a NHL regular.
This is true. The Blue Jackets let him go due to his inability to stay healthy.
In 2010 he signed a try out with NJ but ended up signing for NYR. They found a specilist for his condition and he became a regular under Torts.
A "funny" tidbit (even though I was gutted when the Flames traded him away): Anton and his wife had their second child while in Calgary. But due to them not being married when he was traded to Columbus, his wife and their kids didn't get permission to follow him to the U.S. Scott Howson, GM in Columbus, chartered a plane to Calgary where he and his assistant served as marriage witnesses.
So: Anton and his wife was married in a temporary apartment in Calgary, Anton wearing jeans and a t-shirt, with a new born baby and GM Scott Howson as one of the witnesses.

It seemed lots of people on here thought Rasmus would get a mid first, top prospect and more. But instead we got a late 1st and a depth vet. Somebody was even saying Boston was trading possibly both their 1sts.
And I don't know who was saying it becaue there are so many messages on here. But I think clearly the value people put on a message board does not always correlate with real life. Because obviously Conroy is going to take the best deal possible.
So maybe you are right but who knows.

You were never getting a blue chip for Rasmus. The Poitras type, who is a good B prospect was always best case. I don't think Danielson is an A prospect anymore either, he's a B prospect now.
Now the first was the piece that you hope you can get something in that 10-20 range, but that's no guarantee either way, when you're making the trade now. It would be interesting to know if there were any 1st round picks offered for his last draft.
Unfortunately the teams that stepped up Now were Dallas and Vegas, so the first is unlikely high in either scenario.
I never got the Danielson hype either. I think Pinder said it best is he was drafted high for a high floor. At this stage I would rather have picks and let the scouts find a player.
