Is there something wrong with that? Brzustewicz has played a grand total of 93 AHL games (plus one playoff game), including 23 this year. Putting him on the Wranglers to play big minutes at the start of the season was a perfectly sensible call.

Also 19 year old Gridin played 32 AHL games before "finally" getting a chance

The Flames are one of the youngest teams in the NHL and will likely be younger in a month. This idea they don't play young players is false.

Some of what you say resonates with me, but when you say stuff like this, it becomes difficult to have an opinion that is 25% congruent with yours. You are simply trolling.

Brzustewicz, Kuznetsov, Parekh, Honzek, Gridin, Stromgren, Kerins, and Morton all have seen ice this season. Conroy just finished stating that he wants to get MORE young guys into the lineup from here on out.

Coronato, Zary, Klapka and Pospisil are all recent home-grown talents that have graduated into the Flames' lineup in the last couple of seasons.

Did you forget about Wolf? Heck, one could argue that although Cooley is 28, he is simply a late bloomer that Calgary has developed.

Go back a decade, and see how many other pieces were drafted, developed and had their NHL careers start in Calgary. Calgary has been doing very well in this area for a while now.

I am still mildly upset that they lost Solovyov as I think he will be a regular too, but one would have to be trolling hard to complain about the lack of playing time for young players here. Show me one team that has 3 rookies playing on defence. You can't show it because no team does this - not even San Jose and Chicago. We will see what the pairings look like from now, but I couldn't disagree more with your post.

I think more than how it will make us suck, I'd like more trades if only to see more youngsters fill the empty spots left behind.

Trade Weegar for futures and some dead cap, then slot Parekh into the top 4 full time.

I'll be so miffed if he's relegated to popcorn duty after his conditioning stint because we logjammed our defense.

I voted modest loss based on two things. I don't like the top 10 protection I think that's too generous. I also don't like that it was with Vegas and the likelihood that we are devaluing the first Rounder that we already have from them. If either or both of these were different then I would have graded it higher.

If I'm being honest with myself I think that this trade will wind up being a win another year down the road when the picks are closer and Whitecloud likely adds to the return at the deadline.

If the Flames decide to run with 8 defensemen for the remainder of this season, I forsee the following pairings:

RS RD/LD Weegar – RS RD Whitecloud

LS LD Bahl – RS RD Parekh

LS LD/RD Kuznetsov – RS RD/LD Pachal

LS LD/RD Hanley – RS RD Brzustewicz

Brzustewicz is waiver exempt and can be sent down to the Wranglers without any risk.

My projection is that one of Whitecloud, Hanley, or Pachal will get traded by the TDL.

Whitecloud would bring back the best return, a mid-2nd at the worst, a late 1st at best.

They traded a right-handed D for a right-handed D. The numbers are the same as before the trade.

While they technically have 8 d-men on the roster right now, Parekh counts as one of those 8 while in the AHL, so they only have 7 in the NHL right now.

What's your point?

The math doesn't work for getting these guys playing time. The benefit of moving Ras out was to get these guys icetime. Whitecloud is contrary to that stated goal.

We wouldn't want to downgrade our team too much and embrace a rebuild. This is a rebiggle, adding vets is part of the formula.

I just don’t understand this.

Why now? Why January 18? Is the trade deadline this week?

Maybe I’m missing something but the minute Conroy learns he will not sign an extension with anyone right now don’t you take him off the table and wait for teams who think he can make the difference for a long run to make their offers for Raz the Rental?

I get there’s always a risk you don’t get the return you want closer to the deadline but to me this seems rushed and the return proved it.

The benefit of moving Ras out was to get futures. Whitecloud was a throw-in to make the cap and roster numbers work. Vegas could not have kept Whitecloud and added Andersson, even at 50% retained, without getting rid of another player in a side deal. They could have traded a defenceman lower on their depth chart, but Conroy did not want any of those.

The team had seven defencemen on the active NHL roster before, and still has seven. That's the minimum number that allows for an injury replacement or a healthy scratch. No team likes to carry fewer than seven. When Parekh comes back from his conditioning stint, there will be plenty of time to trade away another body to make room.

The Flames and Andersson both wanted this done before the Olympic break, and the teams bidding on Andersson wanted time to get him integrated with their rosters before the deadline. There was no incentive for anyone to wait longer.

The Lindholm trade happened on February 1 without an extension, and I don't recall anybody complaining that Conroy should have waited longer on that.

CC stating that nobody was losing playing time is BS. The only way it makes sense if Whitecloud is being flipped, which based on intel from the insiders on CP isn't the case.

Doubt very much that another D will be moved by the time Parekh is back. The kids need to play and this trade changes nothing.

Of course nobody’s playing time is going to be reduced. Somebody’s time is going to be increased, because unlike Andersson, Whitecloud is not going to play 26 minutes a night. That leaves more minutes for other players.

Which kids need to play that aren’t playing already?

So it seems Conroy asked Ras camp if there were teams he'd consider extending with so they could work on a sign and trade type of deal with a bigger return for the Flames. They gave him a short list of teams and CC ground away with those teams on acceptable trades, once agreed to they gave those teams permission to talk to Ras camp and those discussions were fruitless, probably because Ras ask is way too high. So ultimately Ras agent said no extension will be agreed to with any team. So CC ground away on those sign and trade deals for nothing and had to settle on the best rental return.

Gotta be frustrating for CC. Especially when some of the bigger return prices were leaked and it makes this return look worse in comparison to some people.

And why exactly should Ras maximize the return for the team dumping him?

(And weaken the team that wants him)
