And if they do win a cup this year, Rasmus will have his ring and has even more incentive just to get the bag from somewhere else.
At this point, it really is just a rental.

Petro is still under contract at 8.8 next year. If his career is done, bam there is your money. Cap also rising but i imagine Doroveyev will eat most of that.

One last solid Rasmus could do for us is to not re-sign with LV. I’d love that.

Good for him, he was only ever going to get a rental return at this point so you take the best package you can get for Andersson without an extension. That’s what they did.
We can go back and say that Conroy should have moved Andersson at the deadline last year or at the draft, but he didn’t, should have, but he didn’t.
I hate that it was Vegas, again, but I don’t see any other team paying that much for Andersson without an extension. He might sign there later, but he isn’t signed now.
The way I see it, we can be mad and frustrated and I get it, or we can see that this team is moving towards the future, and look forward to following the upcoming drafts and all the prospects coming into the system.

One factor that might be sneaky good for Conroy here, is he got Whitecloud in the deal.
So the Knights didn’t add a top 4 defender, they swapped a top 4 defender. Is the upgrade from Whitecloud to Andersson going to make the Knights win the cup? And now Conroy can flip Whitecloud, or another D for extra return.
I think if Conroy can complete more trades with his assists, this may be seen as a bigger win, and maybe the upgrade Vegas made, isn’t as big as they are hoping!

Tough look. Pretty cool that you're reading between the lines and are a savvy fan that see's the end game I guess.
Anyway I'm happy we have lots of picks, that alleviates one of my frustration with this team over the years. They're also valuing those picks and developing them so we don't have to spend assets to get bottom 6 or pairing guys. Just need to add some top line talent now to the roster in the next few drafts.
AND we still have guys to ship out for picks.
Slow boat...but whatever.
|
It's the best plan though isn't it?
Accumulate draft capital
Draft well
Develop well
Move assets before they expire
Don't spend on UFAs to prop up the draft position
All you're missing is a public declaration no?
Most of us don't need that.

But if Vegas wins the Cup in 2026, then misses the playoffs and gets the 10th Overall Pick in 2027, and then misses the playoffs and wins the lottery in 2028, and again in 2029, we get two 1st Overall Picks.

I actually shuddered seeing him in a Vegas jersey.

Underwhelming, but not horrible. Better than the Hanifin return.
I voted modest loss simply because of this year's pick being devalued. Otherwise, it is 'expected'.
I got excited once Boston started discussing contract extension with Andersson, but when it dragged on, this is what I feared - Andersson will not sign an extension with anyone, and just force his way to Vegas. I don't blame him, but this is the issue here with small market teams - players aren't pushing their way to come play in small Canadian markets, but they are strong-arming their way to preferred destinations.
As for the returns:
1st - expected
Conditional second - good - though statistically unlikely it becomes another first
Whitecloud - maybe you can flip him for a 2nd at the deadline - this is the highest value that a defencemen has, but he doesn't expire this year, so he only adds to the log-jam on the right.
Wiebe - 'C' prospect is what I would say he is. However, still a prospect. Getting the 8th best prospect from a team that has spent a lot of futures over the years is underwhelming, no matter how you slice it.
Why would Vegas trade for an extended Andersson? They know they can re-sign him, and at a discount too. It will make this trade look even more lopsided to some, but it is what it is.
Calgary just has to draft high and build a culture here, period. Sucks, but it is what it is. It could have been worse, but probably not much worse. A non-retained Andersson going somewhere else could probably have returned a similar package elsewhere I am guessing, or something close to it.
Definitely should have traded him last season to Toronto. That's a better package, and maybe Andersson would have returned a bit of a premium on that compared to Carlo? Would make sense.
Given this outcome, I would hope that Conroy turns around and trades Kadri and Coleman this season. Calgary got a vet back in this trade that can help with the culture anyway.
This is a disappointing day given the rumours, but it isn't terrible by any stretch. I don't want to sound like I am having a meltdown. This isn't bad at all - in fact, it is still good. It is just in now way great.
Hopefully next time the Flames play Vegas, it will be a fairly violent game where Vegas gets plastered along the boards all game, so that 2026 pick evens out in value after this trade.

Don’t want Whitecloud on the team. Don’t want the roster congestion.
At the end of the day you take the picks and move forward, that’s what rebuilds look like.
|
Flipping him for a 2nd+ would change it from break even to modest win for me
If by chance he returned a late 1st that would make it a home run win

Kind of sickening to be honest seeing that image and realizing he is likely going to be in our division for 7 or 8 years I had been hoping literally anywhere but vegas, but I guess when Rasmus decided he wouldnt sign an extension our bed was made. For me the only way I look back upon this trade fondly is if vegas knock out the grease. flushing this generation of the oilers down the toilet would turn it into a Homerun for me

Can the flames now retain on Whitecloud if they flip him before the trade deadline?

I believe so but then we would have maxed out retention spots to use on anybody else.
