Recently, or in the summer?
Speaking of the summer, what was Vegas rumoured to be offering back then?

This trade hinges on whether we trade Whitecloud or not.

Loved the names out there more...however...
I remember the mood when Baertschi got traded for a 2nd.
Baertschi for a 1st/2nd/Whitecloud and 5-7 round equivalent....
Not bad.

Well, this was not surprising at all. Hear a whole bunch of malarky about massive packages available in trade and then have the Flames bolster a divisional rival with a third-rate deal that really does nothing for the team and pushes the rebiggle out even further. Does this team have a plan to speak of?
I mean, what an absolute brutal return! McCrimmon has to have pictures of Conroy with farm animals in compromising positions. That's the only way explanation for managing to bend Calgary over for two top four defensemen and giving up very little (late future first rounders). A first and a conditional second a full year out is joke, but it tracks with the Hanifin trade. Conroy managed to get painted into a corner where Vegas was able to turn a future 1st, two years out, into a top pair defenseman. Oh, and the conditions on that future first were leveraged to get a top six center out of San Jose in Hertl, which hurt the future pick. Zero thinking about impact on the investment you just made.
But hey, we got a collection of crap (Miromanov and Whitecloud) to go along with the bag of futures that Vegas doesn't have to worry about impacting them until they have had a year or two of playoff appearances on the back of the Calgary Flames. Conroy buried the wedge on the Hanifin deal and then returns to the scene of the crime to bury a second wedge on a deal for Andersson? I appreciate the idea of getting first rounders, but get first rounders in the next draft where you have certainty. Picks two years out is just poor form, unless you know that team is going to fall apart. But that is not the case with these deals. We are fortifying the team we want to see fail.
It is so dumb letting Vegas play with Calgary's house money, just flat out dumb. Conroy is taking draft picks and then helping the opposition team get better, to work against the Flames's interests in getting the highest pick possible! You are gambling on the future pick being better than the immediate pick you know you're going to get, but then fortify that team to make that team stronger and the pick weaker? I like Conroy, but Jesus he needs to learn to do his job better. Stop working against your own interests!

Unfortunately, the Flames will likely not flip Whitecloud and will instead push our prospects down.
Its the Flames way

Agree again.
Which is where my frustration with this franchise begins. The writing was on the wall and they have wasted 3yrs+, so we're in a 7yr+ rebuild.
Also...at the moment, they're not exactly building a contender with the rebuild. At least Treiliving's had a few centers and superstar winger early in his.

Also to consider in the return is the Flames are a worse team moving forward and our own pick hopefully is going to be even higher. Currently 4th and can only see it getting better. Rebiggle is on.

This also tells you how lousy the other offers were. You know that Conroy didn't want to strengthen Vegas, nor take picks that were so far out.

I actually can't recall a time when the Flames flipped a player in the same season they acquired him.
|
That’s fair but I think Whitecloud means they flip one of Pachal, Hanley or Whitecloud eventually before the start of next year. Can’t imagine the plan for next year is to have one of Hunter or Zayne in the minors next season.
I think Whitecloud gets the biggest return but getting him imo means one of those guys gets moved.

Andersson told the Flames he wouldn't sign an extension anywhere and supposedly Vegas had the best rental offer.

Lanny drops in. Nice, I'm here for that kind of unfiltered takedown even if I don't agree with all of it.

I think the most annoying part about this trade for me is that we have VGKs first this year. I feel like we just shot ourselves in the foot and weakened our draft position

Yeah I guess but it’s because they painted themselves into the corner for the past year or so for it to get to this timing. All in the name of keeping player relations in good standing, which the Flames are mindful of because they don’t have a lot of other organizational things going for them when it comes to attracting players.

Well almost every rebuilding team takes the amount of time the Ducks seem to be taking (8-9 years). The only cheat code seems to be drafting a Hart Trophy nominee and have him turn into a Hart Trophy nominee less than 24 months after he was drafted.
It is also to be determined how good Conroy’s picks this year and the next two years are. They will likely be top 5 picks and could expedite it. But most rebuilding teams seem to take 7-9 years to reach a point where they are good (Montreal and San Jose being the only real exceptions I can think of).
