I hope he does extend and then we see the last year's version.

Now that I had some time to think, I actually like this deal quite a bit.
I always thought the price should be around 1 + 2 x 2nds. I think we got the equivalent of that and even slightly more.
Whitecloud is a solid D, and I think many here are going to like his game. Defense, physicality, drops the gloves. I would argue that he's worth at least a 2nd, and he is signed to a pretty good contract.
The only question I have is regarding the log jam on RD. I think it makes it harder to give both Parekh and Brz regular minutes, unless they make another move. I might be in the minority, but I actually like Whitecloud better than Lohrei in terms of a fit with the Flames, because they already have that player in Parekh.

I said I don't mind the trade. I'm not calling it a home run, or even a win. You use things like garbage and fire everyone which is over the top. Over the top statements get reaction, but we're no longer to respond to your dribble or it's bullying.

It’s funny to me that everyone who takes this position knows what we for sure could have gotten last year at the deadline, and it’s not much more than now. And to completely gut the guys on the team who were actually making a push. To just say yeah f you guys and trade the top line def for magic beans. That’s how you become Buffalo
Plus by everyone’s account he had a bad year last year so offers would be less then, right?

See Winnipeg
That said , unless Conroy demanded it, it’s protected
Conroy would have put it front page if it’s not protected

Well at least they are willing to retain money on deals. It's not a homerun trade but it's more badly needed picks and now it's on the organization to turn them into players. I guess we should be Knights fans this spring.

Is the Vegas deal without extension really that much better?

Seems like the only other fairly clear deal without and extension would have been BOS and that was Lohrei + 1st (unsure which one).
I think compared to that, this is a better return, especially if Whitecloud returns something of value, but I'd be curious if the above also included the retention.

I think you guys are over-reacting, it's a decently good return and way better than Hanifin's. I bet Whitecloud can be flipped for a 2nd. So the return is essentially:
- 1st + 2nd (maybe 1st) + 2nd + random prospect
For a rental that is quite a good return tbh. Sure the Boston return would have been better but it's not that far off, Poitras should be valued around a 2nd, and Lohrei around 1st.
Show me a pending UFA that got a better return, Andersson had a good season but this is not a star player.
Go look at old discussion threads about Andersson and see if people thought we would get a 1st + 2 2nds.

The value isn't what I was hoping for, but to do this trade with Vegas when they are a divisional rival and we own their pick this season is disappointing. Frustrating that after creating a market for him, this is all they could get.

And you would have received what? You’d still be sending him to a team that knows they can’t extend him, so the offer would be poor.

Vegas doesn't come back to Calgary this year, but do play the Flames in Vegas April 2nd.

I'd rather the Knights flail around this season and have this year's first be ~15th than have another late 1st two drafts from now.

Good trade! I love 1st and 2nd round picks! People get upset but come draft day it’s very exciting. Once the Flames put names to those picks everything changes. I’m so excited about Gridin and Potter, 1st round picks received from trades.

A rebuild that has a plan to have 25-30 picks in the first 3 rounds over a 5 year period takes time to show results. Despite doing a good job getting Suniev, Conroy was effectively first able to start accumulating these picks in the 2024 draft.
2024 - 6 picks
2025 - 4 picks
2026 - currently 5 picks
2027 - currently 5 picks
2028 - currently 3 picks.
Suspect he continues to accumulate picks and the total number for that period of time ends up north of 25 but less than 30. Conroy has never done anything to indicate there is any desire to be competitive when the new arena arrives and I doubt that will change either.
Folks can be mad about the plan but the plan seems pretty clear to me.
|
This is a good take.
The only really high certainty picks are the first few. After that, it really is dice rolling and Conroy is clearly prioritizing quantity over tanking for quality.
You can get good players either by having a huge number of rolls in the latter half of the 1st and beyond, or drafting really, really high. Conroy is clearly doing the first.

I always say, get that first-rounder, and go from there. Our scouts will make it count.

When you have an organization that's not cutthroat with handling their assets to get the best possible return - due to not fully acknowledging that their team is not within a contention window - this is the type of return you get by waiting too long.

I think we're going to see a shift now where teams will start moving out players with NTC with a year remaining to get the most value for their player.
I was hoping for a 1st plus prospect for Andersson before with an additional piece being the biggest return I was expecting in any deal. Conroy is getting a 1st, a 2nd, an actual NHL defender and a prospect here. I'm unsure what others were expecting say 8 months ago, but I guess perhaps more than I was.

Pretty much agree, but does anyone have any confidence the Flames would see it this way? He’s a serviceable player and will be used to keep the boat drifting with the current. If the Flames shared your mindset the Tkachuk deal would have yielded the future we’d be enjoying today. Instead we’re a couple of points from the drain hoping for a playoff appearance.
I hope the team proves me wrong, but history suggests Whitecloud is here for the long haul.
