So I wrote this letter to the donor family. Is it too cheezy? It's too cheezy and pandering.
Quote:
On December 23, 2025, I had heart surgery to swap out a poorly designed Aortic Valve from birth that had gotten clogged up with calcification and poor flow regime over fifty years. This is a procedure that was always going to happen as I approached fifty years. It started getting bad. Could not walk very far without exhaustion and weird pains. I knew it was time, and the numbers indicated the same thing.
Recommended to a surgeon Dr. William Kent who is an absolute brilliant human. This procedure is quite recent and not done in Calgary until he got the qualifications. The Ross Procedure where they take you’re your pulmonary valve and swap it into your Aortic valve that was garbage then replace the pulmonary with….
But….. now I need a pulmonary valve and that’s where you guys come into the story, they call it a homograft or cadaver valve, which I believe is a ####ty term for that, but it’s clinical and precise so I guess it makes sense. It always seemed so flippant and disrespectful, but I get to live longer so who am I to argue.
It’s been a year now and I am doing well, everything went well (so far) and the Surgeon told me I am likely good for the rest of my life.
They do not tell me about who you are, but whoever died for me is now a living part of me. We are living together and I am their vessel.
I just want to thank you for your son/daughter/mother/father because they are me now. The ultimate sacrifice for some goof engineer in Calgary with a bum ticker.
Selfishly I kinda want to know who I am now a part of but if you have no interest in that, I totally understand. Thank you from the bottom of my previously ####ty heart.

Its an honour to speak with your family! On December 23, 2025, I was required to have heart surgery to swap out a poorly designed Aortic Valve which I've suffered with from birth, it had gotten clogged up over that time with calcification and poor flow regime over past fifty years. This is a procedure that I was informed was always going to have to happen as I approached fifty, which is when it started getting bad and approaching failure. I could not walk very far without exhaustion and weird pains which as I'm sure you can imagine caused some significant concern. The Doctor and I knew that it was time, and the testing numbers indicated the same thing.
I was then recommended to a surgeon Dr. William Kent who is an absolutely brilliant human being. This type of procedure was indicated to me as being quite recent and not often performed in Calgary until Dr. Kent got the qualifications. The Ross Procedure, as I'm told, is where they take your pulmonary valve and swap it into your Aortic valve that was failing and then replace the pulmonary with...(you might want to expound on this but I cant because I dont know jack about it)
However, unfortunately now I need a pulmonary valve and that’s where you and your loved ones come into the story, they call it a homograft or cadaver valve, which I believe is a macabre, albeit accurate term for that procedure, however it is a clinical and precise term so I guess it makes sense. It always seemed so flippant and disrespectful to the donor in my perspective, but as the beneficiary who gets to survive longer who am I to argue?
I just wanted you to know that it has been a year now and I am doing well, everything went well and the Surgeon told me I am likely good for the rest of my life, and this is all thanks to your family and your sacrifice.
They do not tell me anything about who the donor was but whoever died for me is now a living part of me and for that my family and I are extremely grateful. We are living together they and I, and I am their vessel.
I just want to thank you for your son/daughter/mother/father because they are me now. The ultimate sacrifice for some goof (I'd ditch this, but thats up to you, it might be better for them to feel its gone to a good cause rather than self-deprecation in this particular instance, but thats personal preference) Engineer in Calgary with a faulty heart.
Selfishly I would like to know who I am now a part of but if you have no interest in that, that is completely understandable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart which is being generously and selflessly taken care of by one of your loved ones. I just wanted to express my genuine appreciation of the sacrifice you and your family have so selflessly made on my behalf.

Maybe try some variation on that?

Was getting some groceries and they had some different oranges that I'd not seen before (Sumo oranges) so decided to try them but didn't pay much attention to the price..
They're pretty big, but it was like $14 for 5 at the checkout! But I'm too polite to just leave them and too lazy to go put them back so $14 it is.
There's probably some cognitive bias involved but yeah they are the best tasting oranges that I've had in quite a while. A bit of an emotional roller coaster but very happy with the oranges. $3 per orange happy? Maybe...

Ditched TD Insurance. The price creep in home and auto every year was infuriating. Hopefully I don't come to regret switching everything over to The Personal. I kept feeling like we were missing some coverage because it was so much cheaper.
Next - to kill the life insurance or not. Anybody think it's worth keeping if your kids are older and no mortgage to worry about?

Don’t cancel insurance until you have analyzed it thoroughly. If it were free you would definitely keep it. So the question is “Is it worth what you are currently paying?”
Ideally have a proper financial plan prepared which examines the need for the insurance in question. If needed, then consult a life agent (the original one or a new one) to find a policy that fits your need the best.
Keep in mind the person who cannot qualify for insurance is probably the one most willing to pay for it. Since you already have it, keeping it might be an excellent choice. But if the plan shows you don’t need it, you could let it lapse. Alternatively, since your kids will probably benefit the most from it, consider asking them to pay some or all of the premiums.

It's worth keeping at a general level without knowing more about the situation, but a more in depth rate of return calculation and qualitative reasoning isn't thematically in line with the happy thread.

Insurance is one of those things you need change every couple of years.
Providers will always offer a new policyholder a break on rates to get you on board.
Just make sure your coverage is sufficient for your risk.

A small thing, but I found the Zippos our parents got my older brother and I in the early-mid '90s for Christmas in a box of my dad's stuff.
They mysteriously disappeared shortly after we got them, so I'm guessing they were confiscated. Also found another Zippo with one of my brother's friend's name scratched onto it. And another one I don't recognize. It seemed like everybody had a Zippo for a stretch there when I was a kid.
I stopped at two gas stations to find lighter fluid today, first guy at Co-op was like nope, 7-Eleven has it. The guy and the woman at 7-Eleven didn't even know what I was talking about, and told me butane was the same thing just a different brand. I'll hit one of those smoke shops in every mall next week.
Still no sign of that super cool foldy knife I had as a kid.

I remember I wanted a zippo as a kid, but couldn't afford the legit ones. So I bought a knockoff from some random store on Stephen Avenue, and learned fairly quickly why you shell out for the legit version sometimes. The knockoff version was terrible.

Was it Tropicana? The best and most interesting store around. I went there with my mom when I was around 12 and she bought me three Iron Maiden Banners and a T-shirt. Killers (with the boobs in the room in the background), Number of the Beast and another one. I dressed as Eddie one Halloween. It was terrible. They had all the weed smoking devices. Pipes and bongs. They had zippos aplenty. They had cool, probably illegal knives too.
