I can’t remember if I mentioned it in here before, but there’s a book called “The Invisible Leash” that we found really helped when our dog passed away. Our daughter was 3 at the time and 2 years later she still talks about the invisible leash to our dog Ringo.
https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/the-invi...E&gclsrc=aw.ds
Fair warning, reading this book may cause a lot of tears for the adults…haha.

I was curious about this, as helping a child through the loss of a pet, especially one that they've known their entire life, isn't something I'll ever have to do...but my sister in law recently had a family pet pass, and her 3 boys were devastated.
She mentioned the books "Saying Goodbye to Barkley" ( https://www.amazon.ca/Saying-Goodbye.../dp/1925335968) and "All The Dear Little Animals" ( https://www.amazon.ca/All-Dear-Littl.../dp/1776572890) helped her trio (7yo, 5yo, 2yo) a lot.

Good gawd.. I don't know if it's the fact that one day I'll be in this situation with my little guy and our older dog, but I'm getting all emotional just clicking on the bloody amazon links.
puckhog, really sorry for your loss.

Thanks for the thoughts and book recommendations, everyone. Our daughter was at preschool for the morning, so we’re going to talk to her this afternoon. She spends a fair amount of time at her grandparents, so she needs to be aware that Rosie won’t be there next time. Wish us luck!

Put our other cat down last night. She was 17, down to 4 lbs, sleeping 90% of the time, and probably had oral cancer. I'm actually surprised how long she lasted. We put our other cat down 3 years ago after kidney failure and she seemed super dependent on him.
Apartment feels a little empty without a cat around. I hope she's reunited with Tiger in wherever they go after death.

Always hated seeing this thread bumped but it's my turn.
Just let our dog go a couple hours ago. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Almost 15 years old.
Until we meet again.

My 17 year old cat has been struggling lately. Just before Christmas she had a bout of pancreatitis, and I probably should have let her go then, but I didn't. She's stopped using the litter consistently and has already been diagnosed with stage 2 kidney failure. I know I should let her go, I have an appointment for this afternoon, but it's weighing so heavily on me because other than her not using the litter and peeing on clothes, the couch, pillows, blankets.. she seems totally fine.

It’s never easy to make that decision. I questioned it myself with our dog, up to and after. But when you look at their quality of life with a logical lens, you know it’s time.
Good luck today and know you’re making the right choice.

I put it off for my dog for at least 6 months and honestly it did not make it easier for meor change the outcome, if anything it made it worse since the only thing on my mind was the fact I had to make the decision and was causing a lot of struggle that I did not even understand until everything was done.
Still Sucks.

Sorry. It's really a tough situation, and I think you have to juggle a host of factors.
It's gone different ways for me. in 2007 our 14ish year old Shar-Pei had a stroke, but sort of bounced back. He wasn't the same at all, but we hung on for a few months. In retrospect, it was time when he had the stroke, and if I could do it over again, it would have been kinder to put him down earlier.
My pug had a tumor on her neck that was inoperable, and I always said the moment she was suffering I was going to put her down. And I recall I did just that in 2021.
A few years after that, my last dog had heart disease, and he just wasn't ready to go. But he was suffocating from fluid around his heart, but had the spirit of a 3-year-old dog. It still haunts me to have had to put him down, but it was the kindest thing I could have done.
All three dogs were in the neighbourhood of 13 to 15 years old.

Yeah I'm still postponing eol for our 17yo mutt
He's had a paw in the ground for about a year now, but he's still hanging in.
His Cushings continues to get slowly worse, but he does not appear to be in any pain. It's soon though. His whole life has been punctuated by a love of food. Now I spend a lot of time coming and worrying over his meals, b cause he is very picky now, but when he loses appetite I'll know it is definitely time

I went through with it. She curled up with her favourite toy when we got there, like she knew and was ready.
It was such a hard thing to do, but it was the right thing. She wasn't doing well and was so anxious whenever I wasn't around. But man do I miss her little trills whenever I came into my office.
She was so beautiful, and such a sweet girl to me.
