Flames Game Day 48: Celebrating Hockey Day in Canada against the Islanders

Happy Hockey Day in Canada, everyone! It’s a Saturday and the fine folks at the National Hockey League have put together a veritable buffet of ice hockey matches for everyone’s enjoyment. The festivities kick off bright and early with a matinee pitting the Calgary Flames (20-23-4, 44 points) against the New York Islanders (26-16-5, 57 points) in a clash of two teams that entered the NHL together in 1972 – though the Flames were based in Atlanta, Georgia at the time.

Three takeaways as Weegar’s blocks, Backlund’s shortie highlight Flames win in Chicago

Flames captain Mikael Backlund had a pair of points against the Blackhawks, while teammate MacKenzie Weegar sacrificed his body to seal the result.

Flames trade rumours: Flames and Rasmus Andersson would like trade done by Olympic freeze

Gang, it certainly feels like the clock is ticking on Rasmus Andersson’s tenure with the Calgary Flames. And as things seem to be heating up on the trade front, various insiders are beginning to chime in on how things are progressing.

Flames trade rumours: What could a Rasmus Andersson trade with the Ottawa Senators look like?

The Ottawa Senators are a fascinating team right now. They have a ton of exciting young players up and down their lineup. They’re a team that seems on the cusp of breaking through. But they seem to lack a critical mass of talent to do that.

Flames trade rumours: What could a Rasmus Andersson trade with the Detroit Red Wings look like?

Stay calm, everyone. We may finally be on the brink of a Rasmus Andersson trade, potentially ending multiple years of rumours and speculation and everything that comes with the process. However, since a deal hasn’t been completed yet, there’s still time to continue exploring different scenarios of what an Andersson trade could look like for the Calgary Flames.

Are the Flames better prepared to draft high than they were in 2014?

We’re at a difficult point when it comes to predicting how the rest of the Calgary Flames’ season will unfold, and it doesn’t rely entirely on their own performance. The NHL standings are tightly packed, with a small gap separating a wild-card spot from the bottom of the league. The Flames don’t need to play particularly well to remain in the playoff picture, while playing poorly doesn’t necessarily push them to the bottom if other teams struggle just as much.

Blueliner Nick Cicek has been sneaky important for the Wranglers this season

But it’s probably worth letting y’all know about Nick Cicek and how he’s doing this season.
Now, Cicek isn’t a “traditional” prospect. He’s not a Flames draft pick and, in fact, he was never drafted. He’s not as young as some of his teammates, as he’s 25. He’s already played some NHL games – 16 with the Sharks in 2022-23 – and he spent last season in Germany’s DEL with Adler Mannheim. If you want to make some comparisons to past Wranglers, his age makes him a comparable to Jonathan Aspirot, who’s recently found himself in the NHL with the Boston Bruins after a couple years with the Wranglers.

Go Flames. Either win or lose. Keep it competitive and entertaining.

Reading some of the comments above:
- Great that Pospisil is back playing.
- Impressive that Sharangovich has turned things around. Give credit where credit is due.
- Same comment for Zary. He’s been noticeably better lately
- Sounds like Andersson saga is coming to an end. Probably best for everyone.
- Good for Backlund for really stepping on the gas.
- Bahl is becoming a beast. Fun to watch.

This one really feels like Andersson's last hoorah. Hopefully he gets a standing ovation tonight, has his family in attendance, and everyone has a blast.

Selfishly I want to see one final Andersson staredown as the dome erupts.

If Stromgren can’t be a 4th liner (and TBH Hunt looked a lot better than him in that role), I’m not sure he’s an NHLer at all unless his skating gets a lot better.

Before I buy tickets, has it been confirmed yet whether he's playing or not?

Do they usually do a pregame skate on a 1 pm start?

I mean, in theory Anderson could get yanked right before game time or heck, even during the game, if negotiations are this hot and heavy.

Gridin is going to be a good player. I think he’s our best forward prospect
