Weren't we ready to move on from Zary and trade him for the first 3rd round pick anyone offered?

Pretty crazy, almost like he needed some time after a terrible knee injury to get back on track. While he seems noticing slower he gets to the right places to generate scoring chances easy enough

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Sharangovich yet, he's been so much better of late. Especially defensively, which has been a pleasant surprise.

Maybe just keep Sharangovich with Backlund too...they have good chemistry.

Over 17's three seasons as a Flame

55.2 xGF together (35% o zone start)

17 without 11 - 48.4% xGF (62% o zone start)

11 without 17 - 52.5% xGF (37% o zone start)

Play him with Backlund and try to pump up his value longer term.

It is funny how even though the Flames are near the very bottom of the standings, that there continues to be so many 'bright spots' on the team.

Backlund - he should be on Team Sweden. Hopefully they correct this oversight. What a year he is having.
Coleman - injured right now, but another fantastic season and he never takes a shift off, and never makes an excuse.
Zary - He is finally starting to produce and looking like an offensive player you want to keep for the long-term, rather than throw him into random trade proposals.
Cooley - rock-steady and a great personality.
Kuznetsov - looks like a veteran out there night in and night out.
Bahl - He was much better than we all thought he would be last year defensively. Now he is adding a 'great ball of hate' to his repetoire (yes, terrible pun intentional) with trying to be physical and abrasive.
Wolf - still looks like the goalie of the future.
Coronato - has slowed down some, but he looks like a contributing top-6 winger for the a decade I think with his motor, IQ and shot.
Rasmus - soon to be gone, but what a season he is having.
Brzustewicz - Hardly ever mentioned, but having a fairly good rookie season so far. Better defensively than I thought he would be off the bat. Shows you what a year of development can do.
Sharangovich - from "what do you do here exactly" to "worth every penny" lately. Yes, it has been a bit of a yo-yo with him, but credit is due for him stepping up and playing well in every way - middle of the ice, net-front, along the boards, physically, defensively - he is doing it all right now.

It is never as dark as it seems. I am really most enjoying Backlund right now, however. At his age, to be competing the way he is? He was also injured earlier this season, and I thought he was on his way to having a big down-season given his age, so to see him just doing so well is even nicer to see. I have no idea how many more seasons Backlund has left in him, but I am loving watching him compete and produce. Hope it continues! Sharangovich playing well with Backlund is great too - hopefully it will help Sharangovich develop some consistency in his game from the master of consistency in Backlund.

He gets warmed up at a glacial speed each season it seems.

^^ I’d say Klapka has taken some strides as well. And Farabee looks like he just might be able to fill a role going forward.

Hopefully Parekh is added to the list.

So many guys are better with Backlund and/or Coleman.

Zary, Sharangovich, Coronato.

It's awesome. But also, these dudes need to be able to do it more consistently. Or we need more Backlunds and Colemans.

Zary has been fun to watch when he has a nose for the net. We were having too many perimeter players before. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone actually crash the net and make something happen.

That's fair, but this is a case where Backlund is actually better with Sharangovich too.

Not the same in other cases.

47+11: 48.4% xGF
47 w/o 11 : 52.1% xGF
11 w/o 47: 53.6% xGF

Zary and Backlund actually don't have good chemistry and both tend to be better away from one another.

27+11: 52.0% xGF
27 w/o 11: 47.7% xGF
11 w/o 27: 53.2% xGF

Coronato gets a big lift from Backlund but doesn't lift Backlund that much.

If Coleman gets traded it's Sharangovich that should get that spot IMO.

And we do need more play driving centers. Kadri is good at generating offense but he's not really a strong 200ft center that is strong defensively and can drive play.

Pretty impressive that Kuznetsov is holding down 20 minutes per game. That's not typical for a rookie and good for him. I am so glad that he was able to sneak through waivers without getting snagged and then finally got his chance and immediately established himself.
Brzustewicz at 12 is more normal for rookie minutes.
Andersson at 26 minutes is crazy. Conroy should point at that and tell teams to raise their offers again.

Also loved this hit by Klapka on Josi, I don't think they showed a replay of it.

I can hear the kaboom, even though the GIF doesn't have sound!

I really wish that the Flames had put both RS RD Daniil Miromanov and LS LS LD Jake Bean on waivers to start the season which would have only cost Calgary a mere $750k in Cap Space to bury them both in the AHL. Calgary would still have both 25-year-old LS RD/LD Iyla Solovyov and 23-year-old LS LD/RD Yan Kusnetsov. They are essentially the same player. 6'3", 208 lbs. vs 6'4", 209 lbs. Solovyov is 2 years older and has a slightly higher offensive upside. Kuznetsov is younger and a little more physical. Bean is injured and will be a UFA at the end of this season and is unlikely to be re-signed. Miromanov is a UFA at season's end and has already cleared waivers down to the AHL costing the Flames only $100k in Cap Space. He also is unlikely to be re-signed.
Looking back, it was bad asset management by the Flames to not keep Solovyov.
