Like most of ME’s wealth that’s paper but not currency. Sure you can borrow against it I guess.
Wages are paid though, in currency. They are real. As are gate receipts and all the related income streams from the team.
I am one of many on those board that has seen ME squeeze a buck pretty ####ing hard to save a penny.
Maybe it doesn’t line up with your interactions with him. Maybe he was feeling generous those days.
I’d suggest he is mad at the value returned on Huby’s contract both in terms of real cost and opportunity cost.

The opportunity cost of taking this tkachuk deal verse another one.
Paying this guy nearly 100m to offensively lead your team and he's a complete dud. If hubby was around a ppg in his time with calgary im sure theyre in and out of playoffs, probably not bottom of the league.
All our oher UFA deal signed have performed at or above the level of their contracts during their time here (coleman, backlund, weegar, kadri, rasmus, lomberg)
Cant even dump him for nothing or change of scenery it.
Huberdeau has cost Edwards alot of money.

Treliving has cost Edwards a lot of money.

Oh lord.
Breathe, take your ativan and relax.
You’ll have your time to cheer, but most importantly get angry at the return no matter how good/bad you think it is!
In all seriousness, it’s coming to an end here… allegedly

Sorry this post isn't about Buffalo. I think Ras should net more than Hanifin, if we're comparing potential returns. Dude has unreal offensive stats this season, minute muncher, will stare down a grandmother in the crowd. Intangibles outside of the points, in essence. Hanifin in comparison was kinda just a good foot soldier. Master of none. I think im setting myself up for disappointment. Lets talk about Buffalo again.

The prospect coming back with the pick should be better than Miromanov (not sure it can't be...). Obviously hope for better but suspecting that would be the framework for a trade for a rental.

I mean sure Hanifun earned his right with his limited NTC.
Still makes me feel like I want Klapka or Lomberg to plaster his ass into the 5th row!

Exactly. That was such a massive missed opportunity. Trade Tkachuk for futures. You have Lindholm, Andersson, Hanifin, all with term and coming off career years you could have dealt for good returns. You tank for 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026. You're probably almost done your rebuild.
Instead, we're sitting in 30th place right now, have the worst contract in the league, have zero stars, and are still scared to make any type of bold decision.
Murray is an idiot.

@Royle: would you say it’s pretty much a certainty Andersson is traded before the Olympic break at this point? Or if Conroy does not like what is offered, will he wait for the TDL?

All this talk about being Buffalo is kinda funny. Look up North, they were on their way to being “Buffalo” if not for one lucky ball and gifting them a generational talent.

Effing crap. i will never forget that day in 2015. I was at the Calgary Expo selling but had to go home to grab restock. Watched the lottery and didn't want to go back.

I hope it's a team out of complete nowhere like Buffalo. Jarmo goes completely bat#### insane and trades us Konsta Helenius, Bowen Byram and their 2026 1st (unprotected) for a signed/extended Andersson at $12M/year for eight years.

Yes, how dare the team not look into their perfectly accurate crystal ball and see how this all turned out in fact.
Even after losing Gaudreau trade, a lot of pundits were calling Calgary the winner of the Tkachuk trade (particularly after the Kadri signing) and thinking we were potentially no worse off than before, if not better off. Tearing it all down at that point because Gaudreau left and Tkachuk wanted out was not on anybody sane's radar.
What ended up happening was incredibly disappointing but hindsight is 20/20.

It was also an unusual situation. The Flames had built a core, and then in one off-season it got completely dismantled, even when most of those players still had many core young years ahead. That hasn't happened much. And I can understand why the organization wanted to try and keep a contention window open because they thought they were at the start of that, not the end. And if you want to feel REALLY bad about all that, you can think about how basically the Oilers did it to them. The Oilers ENDED that version of the Flames. Yuck.
It also just doesn't matter. They didn't do it. At what point do you move on and think about the future. The key is has the organization learned from those errors, and that's I guess where the debate is. Conroy talks openly about what he learned from losing Johnny for nothing, and how he wouldn't let them happen again. Good.
But dear god, some folks are stuck in the past.

Even after the first year they missed there was talk from anaylsts on whether it was a sign of things to come or just a bad year.
It was after they had another bad start that it turned to that it wasn't just a bad year and that they should rebuild.

I was gonna say. There was a report I read yesterday about Bettman saying something about that and if it's an actual issue or not.
