Haha. Which one? Must have been system 7.

If there's anyone that's a candidate for malware, it;s me.

Ya, it was one of the 7's, maybe 7.6. The funny part was that I got the virus from a MacWorld or MacAddict demo disk, can't remember which one it was. Man were they embarrassed.

Man, sometimes I miss the old pre osx days. Something goes wrong, rebuild desktop, zap pram, delete new extensions.

I definatly don't miss the memory mnagement and setting up memory for apps.

As one who's never had a issue with a PC for 10 years, as far as freezing, virus issues and the like, I find that reasoning somewhat lame for me, and not a sole reason for cutting down the PC platform.

That said, I may have some extra $ to throw around for a laptop for fooling around on and having a Mac may be a nice change to the exsisting home PC....however its quite the premium to pay to get a Macbook that has something as simple as a DVD burner...$1340 unless I can get a student discount with my old number. Even then...

Still, for a 2nd computer I can get a decent spec PC laptop for almost half the $.

I like my Macbook, it does its job really well. The only thing that is a pain is sending it in for repair. I use my PC mostly for Gaming and surfing the net.

lol not for long...

i have a PC and dont have my anti-virus on and i run it every few months and never have any viruses.

anyways there is no point to a mac vs pc debate - most of it is corporate marketing BS and some people still fall for it...

i have seen a MAC crash many many times and freeze up, same with a PC.

I currently own 4 PC's and have very few problems with them. I also have a new laptop with Vista Premium installed. I'm happy to report that I've also had absolutely no problems with that either AND I run plenty of high-end and older games on the machine. No glitches, runs every one. What are the problems with Vista anyway?

As for Mac, I've tried a few and they are fine as far as they go. Depends what you need. I play games so PC is the way to go.

Only thing thats keeping me from buying a Mac is that more programs are being developed for Windows compared to Mac. Also how can you live with that one button mouse?

While it is unlikely that i will ever want to own a current generation mac, i do give them props for their commercials, probably the best campaign out there right now. Whole new meaning to, funny cause its true,

Uhm.... you don't. When I bought my G4, I tossed the 1-button mouse in the garbage before I even left the store. Starcraft would have been absolute hell with a 1-button mouse.

If you are buying for games, get a PC.
If you are buying for video editing/multimedia, get a Mac.

Yeah, Mac has done a superb marketing job, and pretty much everyone who I talk to who owns one are extremly happy. But I must say, of the people I know who own one, their all on the lower end of the computer literate scale.

I think it comes down to the user. I've been on a windows based system since 93/94, and by no means is windows perfect. Far from it, but I personally have a good enough grasp on the OS that I haven't encountered a blue screen of death in years, I don't remember the last time either of my home PC's froze, and the last time I got a virus I knew I was going to get one because I was searching for a crack for a program I absolutley needed that night to burn a powerpoint presentation to a DVD Video. Not a big deal, just ghost the drive or reformat it.

The other reason I can't see myself switching is the upgradeability. I'm constantly tweaking and adding new parts to my computer, and you can't do that with a mac.

For general net browsing, email, word processing and that kind of stuff, i'm sure a mac is great. And for most people that's probably all they need. Myself, I like my PC's to be my own. I build them, install all the software and drivers and know exactly whats going on inside it. Dual boot windows with ubuntu and you're golden.

Also, how much will one pay for a typical setup from Mac?

imo, their warranty is crap... my power cord on my macbook just melted and there's been many cases where this has happened before.. and when i bring it into an apple dealer, they say that they can't do anything because apple will not replace it... and the thing costs 100 bucks for a new one!

Why are you dealing with the dealer? Call Apple.

Mac's are great little units, but I've had various issues with them in the past. Mostly it was due to software not being as flexible as it's PC cousins, or the design of the peripherals. Seriously, add a second mouse button to the iBook/MacBook!

But, if I were to replace my Toshiba laptop, I'd likely pick up a new MacBook. Desktop, not gonna even look at it. I like building my own computers.

Sidenote... Vista has recently gotten alot more stable. The hardware manufacturers finally got their heads out of their bottoms and released proper drivers, which fixed every issue I had with the new OS. Turn of the UAC crap and it's still much more secure then any version of Windows before it (except Windows 2.0, perhaps).

Its a closed system, and like any closed system they dont have to write code to deal with every possible scenario.

They do what they do very well and they are very good at it. I own a iBook simply for graphic/media type stuff and I own 3 pc because well I get paid to support pc at a higher level so I cant really abandond them.

If you are introducing someone to comptuers who has never used one, say a parent or grandparent, introduce them to a mac. If they have prior Windows useage, then a mac isnt a great idea because the learning curve for older folks is almost unsermountable.

I've had luck introducing some people to a properly setup version of Ubuntu as well. Only catch is if they absolutely need Microsoft Office.

But for internet/email and that sort of thing, nothing beats a cheap PC with Ubuntu on it.

There's no need to gratuitously insult Mac owners. This a thread for Mac users to talk about the new Mac. If you want to bash Macs and Mac users, start a dedicated thread for it so I can avoid it.

There are numerous third-party manufacturers of multi-button mice for Macs.
