To be honest I never really felt they had aged badly. I kept thinking how much those types of effects are missed in modern day films. The props/animatranics had a 'real' creepiness to them which I think both elevated the film and fit its vibe perfectly. I don't think CGI could have achieved that - for me most CGI is easy to discern, so my brain computes it as some animated sequence which can take me out of it.

I watched The Fly (1986) a couple days after this film and I had a lot of the same takeaways. (amazing film btw)

I badmouthed One Battle After Another on here, but a friend of mine claims that it's a satirical take on Terminator 2, and what would result if someone attempted to make Terminator 2 in today's woke Hollywood environment. I'm not sure I buy it, but the plot is very similar to Trrminator 2, and it's supposedly PT Andrson's favorite movie. If that's the case, then its absolutely brilliant.

Keeper. I didn't love the Monkey, but really liked Longlegs, so was intrigued by Osgood Perkins' latest movie. The trailers were well done and didn't reveal much.
Finally watched it tonight. I loved it. It was billed as 'a dark trip'. Absolutely. Kind of wish I did an edible before it lol. I won't give anything away, but it's not like either of his two previous movies. Pack some patience, it's a bit of a slow burn, but damn was it good. Creepy as hell.

I agree completely. The creature designs revealed near the end were worth the very slow and meandering first 75%.

Saw Tron: Ares.

Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Had very low expectations. For the first part, I was not into it. The premise is dumb. Rich Corporate nepo baby finds a way to bring people and objects out of the computer and into real life, with a 3d printer.

Something about that just doesn't work for me. Especially when they somehow have the Tron game dynamics, like speeder bikes with the trailing walls, in real life. I mean...how the F would that work? You can just 3d print a futuristic motorbike that can do that somehow?

It's also very Jared Leto heavy. In a very annoying way, as the role is nothing but him sharing revelations. But it also works. Leto is good as a robot who thinks he's discovered the meaning of life and needs to share his epiphany with everyone....that's kind of his actual personality. He was meant for this role.

The execution of the film was actually all right though. It didn't drag and had some good action sequences. They did a really good job of incorporating the soundtrack and the visuals. Once you get past the lazy premise, it's actually an ok pure action/effects film.

What, regarding Terminator 2, could you possibly not make today?

Kinda sounds like the two of you belong together, though. Absolutely mental.

Anyone considering seeing the new Avatar should catch it in IMAX 3D before it's run is over. The characters and story are fine but what Cameron has achieved and put on screen is absolutely incredible.

This is the pinnacle of what can be done in terms of technology to date with the format. The texture of the characters skin, the light reflecting off objects, the water, the CGI whales, the ships, it's all incredible to take in. Half of the time you'll just be wondering how they did that but you'll still enjoy it as a movie. Don't watch this on a TV, the bigscreen is essential and I'll almost say 3D is as well.

We did a sort of Keanu Reeves Dystopian Film Festival over the past few days. All of them felt relevant to what's happening in the world right now to some degree, and none of them were great.

Johnny Mnemonic - he's an information courier with a chip in his brain. Felt like a tv movie. Apparently it had a big influence on The Matrix, which you can see clearly.

The Day the Earth Stood Still - I've resisted watching this for years since the 1951 original is one of my favourite movies ever. It didn't come close, but I didn't really hate it either. Need to rewatch the original again.

A Scanner Darkly - it's a weird mix of live action and animation (everything was rotoscoped), thus visually interesting and kind of jarring. The story was about drug addiction and surveillance and became very convoluted, which the animation either made more confusing or became a comment on addiction.

Johnny Mnemonic - This is based on a short story from American/Canadian author William Gibson. He's the one who coined the term cyberspace. Many of his novels had a strong influence on The Matrix, like Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive which were heavy on the cyberpunk themes that The Matrix brought to screen.

A Scanner Darkly - Based on the book by sci-fi to movie heavyweight Philip K Dick. If you thought the movie was hard to follow, the book is far harder! The confusion and unreliability of the drug addled narrator are a big part of it.

Watched The Worst Person in the World and Sentimental Value the last 2 days.

2 virtually perfect movies by Joachim Trier. I've also seen his horror movie, Thelma, which was great too.

So I got to see The Bone Temple (part two of 28 Years Later)

I think there are going to be a lot of retractions of earlier statements from those that hated part one and probably wrote this new arc off too soon. Very, very happy "28" franchise fan here. But beyond that, I enjoyed the creative strides this iteration has dared to take (when the zombie genre is typically guilty of sticking to a predictable and safe formula to appeal to audiences). It's small in scale, but absolutely nothing is wasted. And I thought it hit some of the same notes as 28 Days in terms of suspense, really strong character work, and conveying how even in a perilous world, it's other people that are the true threat. But impressively, it manages to be entirely its own thing at the same time.

Shuddered, winced, laughed, applauded.

10/10

And oh man, the next one should be great.

Ya, you rented a VCR for the weekend to watch movies because they were so expensive if I remember. Be kind, rewind.

Fata, my brother and I watched The Thing so much. It just makes you uncomfortable the whole time.

What platform can you watch it?
I'm pretty sure it's still on Crave.

Marty Supreme was a hell of a movie.

Chalamet is incredible, and deserving of all the praise. The storytelling is non-stop, aggressive, and engaging. Every character is exciting, no matter how small their roll was. Every scene matters. There's no wasted time. It's absolute chaos from start to finish, even as the credits are rolling. And I think I must love chaos, because Uncut Gems also worked for me.

Edit:

"...how small their roll was.". Jesus.

I loved it, but Marty Supreme did have some fat around its edges that could have been trimmed. Not sure I can agree with every scene mattering.

It's a marathon in more ways than one, but a worthwhile one.

It's probably in my top 2 or 3 for 2025.

I loved Uncut Gems as well, also shows how great Sandler can be along with Punch Drunk Love. Actually makes me dislike his recent garbage comedy even more than I already did, the stuff he produces himself is just abhorrent but he's so great in those 2 serous roles.

I have Good Time lined up but haven't gotten to it yet, looking forward to that.

I loved 28 years. Can't wait to see Bone Temple. For some reason I like zombies universe and hate superhero.

I like both genres but I was pretty thoroughly disappointed by '28 Years Later.'

I liked the previous ones and I'm hopeful for Bone Temple.

I think those are probably just scenes you’ve yet to appreciate and didn’t get the significance of, as I can’t think of any that didn’t contribute something meaningful, but I’d be curious as to which you’re referring to.

Care to share?

Good Time is also… good lol. It’s not as fully formed as Uncut Gems or Marty Supreme but has all the elements of a Safdie movie if you’re into it, just a little more unrefined. Plus it’s got Robert Pattinson in one of his earlier “I’m not the guy in Twlight” roles and he’s great in it.
