Its already happened, although not to the extent its being suggested with Andersson. In 2023, for example, the Coyotes held Jakob Chychrun out of the lineup from February 12 while waiting to trade him (to Ottawa, eventually), which happened on March 1

Also, Columbus did the same thing with Gavrikov before trading him to LA; they announced they were scratching him on the 14th, and again, he was traded on March 1.

The Canucks did the same thing With Luke Schenn that season, scratching him starting, I believe on the 23rd, until the 28th when they traded him to Toronto.

I think all of those guys had term left on their contract and consent from the player for that to happen.

Bettman said it is something he is keeping his eye on and will work with the NHLPA if it continues to be done.

Quote:
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said he plans to look into the influx of players being scratched from lineups for trade-related reasons and added that the topic will be discussed at next month's general manager meetings.

"We've seen this to an extent we haven't seen before," Bettman said at a press conference in Edmonton Monday night. "It's something we have to keep an eye on."
Quote:
Bettman said if the league determines the number of trade-related scratches is an issue, he would discuss it with the NHLPA. But, he added, "first we've got to decide whether or not it's a problem."

"We haven't seen it to this extent and it's something that we need to focus on as to whether or not it's a unique phenomenon for whatever reason this year, and whether or not it's a problem," Bettman said.

Sure, maybe someone gets hurt at the Olympics, or in a game before then, or a practice, or getting in/out of a car, or slipping in the shower...

Not sure what term has to do with it, but both Gavrikov and Schenn were slated for unrestricted free agency. Gavrikov re-signed with LA and Schenn signed with Nashville.

Chychrun had requested a trade, but more than a year previously.

Yes, players can get injured at any point, nothing new there. But it is incredulous to believe that no GM's care about the ADDED injury risk that playing in the Olympics brings. How many teams lost key players because of the 4 Nations tournament? At least 4.

The added risk of injury to Rasmus at the Olympics has to be calculated. Some games are going to be blood baths and these guys are going to be going full tilt playoff style hockey. He needs to be dealt before

While teams are mitigating risks if they wait till after the Olympics to make trades, they also risk costing themselves points leading up to the Olympics by waiting. I guess teams have to make a decision on what is more important at this point.

The Olympic injury danger is only relevant during the Olympic break. Literally no point in trading for a player at the Olympics while you’re not playing games. But some games before are absolutely worth making the move for.

That’s the same reason a team won’t want to trade for him beforehand though

People always think the Flames are the only ones with agency.
