How much did we pay for that first round pick? $4.5m or so? Markstrom had over two years remaining on his deal at six million per season, and we picked up 31.25% of the remainder of the contract.

Sure, you can calculate it that way if you assume there’s no difference between Bahl and Holtz.

Mercer would have way more than 50 points playing 1st line centre with PO time. He trade value would be much greater than Bahl, and I like Bahl.

One reason the earlier trade never happened is that the Devils absolutely refused to include Mercer in the deal.

The Flames might have got Holtz + a 1st. There was no way they were ever getting Mercer.

Pretty irrelevant given the cap situation

Why would Mercer be playing 1C?

Capwages has us retaining 1.875M this season on Markstrom, I figure that number was similar last season. I think puckpedia cap retention calculator had his retained salary around a mid 2nd round pick for 2M for 2 seasons. I don't think it is as simple as saying the retention cost the Devils a first rounder.
